Lots of people say that, and I understand. Polymer would not be my first choice either. But there are LOTS of polymer pistols around there and they seem to be doing just fine...

And besides... 100 bucks for a stripped lower (in these times)... it'll get you by for now. And it it turns out to be that horrible, you can get a different one when the billet ones and etc come back down to a reasonable price.

Or look at it this way, if one wears out too fast, you've got 4 spares

Went to the Calgary Shooting Centre the other week.

This was my first time with my AR-15, in the gallery range.
Then we moved to the Cinema range.

I had a great time. It was nice being able to try out a few different rifles, and a few different handguns (the Sig is mine). Had to change out the magazine on the CZ after every 5 rounds (thanks to the Canadian laws of restricted mag capacities!!!). And the first shot with the S&W made me take a step back, literally!

With a better shooting stance, you would not have stepped back on the first S&W shot. In the picture, you are actually leaning back at the waist. It is a matter of physics. If you didn't want someone to push you, you would lean forward, not back. The gun pushed you.

1. feet shoulder width apart
2. shooting hand foot a little farther back than support hand
3. knees slightly bent
4. nose over toes (lean forward a bit at the waist)

That will help you manage recoil better and have faster followups

That's exactly what should happen. If everyone was armed I guarantee you the good guys would far outnumber the bad guys.
