Figured I might as well join in here, even though I'm late to the party... I'll be continuing my last years trend of attempting to loose weight. I'm 6'2 and was 210lbs all through high school, and started climbing steadily for the next 7 years after graduating. At my biggest I was ~295 going into 2011.

Although it wasn't a resolution last year, I decided I should start working on myself early May. I started hiking after work 3 to 7 miles a day, 5 to 6 days a week. I didn't really change my eating habits much, ate the same things mostly just less of it at a sitting, toss in a salad here and there, and less beer.
By the end of last summer I was down to ~247, and stopped hiking when the weather got too crappy. Currently about ~257 with the winter hibernation weight.

I'm planning on starting up the hiking routine again soon... I'm too cheap to go to the gym, and I find hiking/being outside more enjoyable, and easier to stay on task. I'd like to drop another 40 lbs, which I don't think is an unreasonable goal.

Pic below left ~2011 at about 295lbs, right taken last summer ~250.

Good to have ou here, the more the merrier. A gym is not necessary, eating good and staying active works rather well for most. 40 lbs is a very realistic goal, anything we can do to help just let us know

Just a quick question CFD - when I finally get
home til will be 9:00pm again - if I make a
small protein shake (8oz) should I use skim
milk or water? How about throwing in a banana?

That depends, what is the reason for the shake?

Thought I might be hungry, but not so much.
My calorie total for the day is less than 1200 so
a shake would get me to the total.

Well, that's a tough question then. They both have their draw backs for a late night drink being sugar content, carb content and glycemic index. So from a fat loss standpoint the skim milk is the lessor of the two evils but if you look at the big picture both are not that bad. Nutrient wise, I'd go for the banana, they replenish electrolytes and have a good dose of potassium. Now where as it's a small shake if you got away with half a banana the tables are turned in the direction of the banana on all fronts. Use the other half on your oatmeal in the am, that's what I do. lol

Depending on what flavor protein powder you will be using, if a 1/2 tsp of cinimon would go with it that would help keep blood sugar stable and make either one better.

By the way, when using the banana I'd use a little water and ice cubes not both the banana and skim milk.

Also, I'm curious as to what protein powder you use?

Designer Whey Protein. I'll do that with 1/2 the banana and the
Cinnamon would be good. I prefer vanilla flavor over chocolate

That would make it better. I took a look at the Designer Whey Protein, it's typical of a lot of protein powders but there are much better ones. If you look at the ingredient list you will see all kinds of stuff, many of which are very important but they are label decorations, there are not sufficient amounts to have any real effect and the protein level is a bit low. When buying a protein powder look for the fewest ingredients as you are paying for the whey protein. Container sizes are different but take a look at Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey. lb for lb it's about the same price but it is higher in protein 24g compared to 18g, less carbs and less sugar. It also tastes good and mixes well.

That was tasty. 1/2 banana and a little cinnamon with 3 ice cubes
And 1/2 cup water. Still shows under for the day but I don't think
there is enough calories given for the Greek salad with chicken I
had for lunch. Salad dressing drizzled . Srsly I don't like a lot,
probably came to 2 tbsp tops. I should take some measuring spoons
to work

Now if only I could find someone to wash my blender when I use it
Have you ever tried "magic bullet". Wonder if that's any easier to clean?

I have a magic bullet and used to use it a lot, when it burned out I started using a full sized blender again, they're much better IMHO. The one I have now cleans real easy as the blades come off so nothing gets stuck or built up under them.

I get my ON whey from GNC. Their prices are typically high but if you buy it on sale or with their gold the prices are good. Almost all stores of that type carry ON. It's a good Whey Protein for the money. You can also order it on line.

No problem with GNC I have one very close to home. I buy most my vitamins and supplements there. I'll stick to the big blender. It does do a good job. Has a smoothie button I like to use.

Boot camp in the early am. Gotta get some sleep
