You can't do a 5-3 downsift on the freeway and leave the others in the dust with an Autotragic trans. Once you have done that, you'll stick with the six speed.

I think there she be a law that makes it illegal to have a car with over 300hp or diesel truck with an automatic tranny.

There will be an exception made for those totally neato super duper paddle shift trannies in the extremely high end sports cars and race cars where a computer runs the clutch for you because it out performs your foot...

Just a matter of choice for each individual.

My reason is for racing. One car is a boosted big block with a 5 speed. This one will be a TT small block auto. They are both fun and each has its pros and cons.

As long as you are happy, cool.

I am not sure why you started the thread with a throwdown to the manual group: 'has that old stupid " you gotta have a manual or your not a man " attitude gone away?' but it is user preference.

Either way enjoy your Camaro if you decide to order one.

I can drive manual, but chose auto because...

- I'll be doing 0-60 much more often than 1/4 runs (0-60 0.1 sec faster)
- Better gas mileage on the highway
- Convenient in city traffic
- Tapshift option (I realize still not as fun as a real stick)

No it's not gone away, and you are not a man just for asking such a silly ass question.

If you were a man, you'd be completely fine driving either a stick or an auto and would not be asking about it on a Forum.

You will know when you've reached manhood, when you don't give a F$%^ what anyone else thinks about your transmission.

I love downshifting a manual and punching the gas, but with there is also an intense feeling with an automatic I can't get with a standard.

One time that comes to mind: (from a while back) was in a 68 Camaro on a 4 lane road with a well built, high rpm small block shifting from 1st to 2nd at 8200 rpm and chirping LOUDLY right by the open window of some dick in a Volkswagon that had just dangerously cut us and the car in front of us off. Doing that in a manual can be a little dicey...

In the past people have said manuals are better manuals are quicker and manuals are more fuel efficient !
That was back in the old days !!!!!!

Today a modern automatic runs circles around a manual in everyway yes sticks are a lot of fun when you want to go 100mph or do those cool burnouts then there is the heavy traffic moments and the replacment of those wonderful overrated clutches that can take abuse when they really cant.

There are quite A few idiots such as me who live to find a good race every once in a while but still likes to own my car and drive it daily without all the troubles a manual has to offer.

All things being equal an automatic car with a decent torque converter will run off and hide from a stick, Usually be a pretty good amount. MODERN computer controlled automatics will always shift at the exact same rpm every run and will never miss a shift. The new generation of automatics are also quite strong.

I know of a new ... same trans with paddleshifters ) to make it more "fun" if you choose to use them. As to a race from a roll, you use your shifter to keep the car in a lower gear BEFORE the race starts. If you have to wait for the transmission to downshift on it's own the stick will have a big advantage because the driver will ALREADY have it in a low gear. If both drivers are prepared and the cars are equal otherwise it should be a pretty equall race unless the manual driver misses a gear and when it comes down to the moment of racing a drive who never misses a gear is something thats Very rare. GM's drivetrain has a 100,000 mile factory warranty so obviously Chevy thinks there tranny will handle anything I myself or you can throw at it.

To sum it all up, manual shift trannies are dinosaurs yes they are fun but also OLD NEWS. The new generation in automatics beat them in every way.

Chevy sells more automatic Corvettes each year than they do sticks just ask any dealer on this site. Go to the drag stip and compare the number of automatics to manual shift cars.....

High school kids love sticks. It makes them feel more masculine. Personally I'd rather feel like a winner on the track and streets and comfortable doing so at the same time. These same kids think smoking makes them look more masculine too so we know how smart they are huh ?

I totally understand your reasoning (don't nessicarily agree, but understand) on your post EXCEPT in this part. The demographic for the vette is far older than a Camaro. My dealer himself told me when I ordered my Camaro and he saw my Vette (2000 C5, Z51, 6 speed) he would never take it on trade in because he can't move a car like that and they rarely sell stick vettes unless they are ordered due to the demographic. Plus I would get more for it on ebay anyway.

Basically my point is its Auto Vettes don't sell more cause they are as fast or faster, they sell more because the average customer is 50+ and many are past the age that they need to have a stick to enjoy the car. (no offense to the 50+ crowd, I'm just talking averages of the general pubic here!).

-------------

As for the main post... *****!

J/k

I prefer a manual because I just enjoy that mechanical connection to the car. It bothers my knee sometimes, (esp in traffic) but I feel its a small price to pay. Plus Ive raced cars for years so I am pretty good with squeezing every last bit of performance out of it, double clutching and so on, so it just feels faster and sometimes that SOTP feel is all you need. That double clutch downshift and rev in a tunnel, etc... its exciting!

If I would have had to use my Camaro for a daily driver, it would have been an Automatic, no doubt.

Even an old guy like me doesn't hold the auto in disdain like so many people do.

I have no issues with a car equipped either way.

Both Automatics and Manuals are part of General Motors, Chevrolet, Fbody and Ybody etc etc etc heritage. These new improved Made in USA Turbo Hydramatic 6L80 are just improved versions of what GM has been shipping out for a long time.

It's in the brand new Suburban's and Escalade's.

You have to buy what you like. Both types have unique qualities.
