They should have a cop in each school, we did in my Phoenix district. Even though the kids had guns, they knew what would happen, very fast if they pulled them.

First of all, focus should remain on the victims of this tragedy and their families. All thoughts, prayers and support we can possibly offer should be provided though it is so totally insufficient. Their hearts are broken and will remain broken for the rest of their lives.

True that guns don't kill people, people kill people. I hate it that every time there is any tragedy involving a gun whether it be a domestic murder suicide or a tragedy as horrendous as this one, folks start blaming the gun instead of the prepertator. True that if an individual is of a mindset to kill they will find a way with or without a gun. True that today's society is increasing the incidence & seveity of mental illness as I have witnessed during my career in mental health treatment. This includes everything from poor parening, extreme violence portrayed in media, games etc, and far too many other factors to mention in this statement that have changed the socialization of our children today. I never saw diagnoses such as bipolar disorder, psychosis, suicidality, extreme violence and severe cases of deprssion, anxiety disorders, PTSD etc in PRESCHOOLERS 25 years ago but I see it daily now. That HAS changed. Our legal system and mental health treatment accessability has also gone backward in many ways druing that time. Mandatory treatment underwhich some prepetrators or seriously mentally unstable/dangerous individualy are released is a total joke and is rarely ever enforced at least in areas I am aware of. Far too many unstable folks are allowed to roam our streets untreated because they have the "right" to choose whether or not to be treated, yet we apparently do not have the right to be safe in our own communities because of their "rights". The same for dangerous criminals who are either found "innocent" due to legal tecnicalities regarding their rights regardless of the rights of the larger community, or who get a slap on the wrist sentence or are released early due to "good behavior" or prison overcrowding. This also includes perpetrators of child abuse and domestic violence who are some of the most dangerous folks among us. I know this is getting rather political but moderators, please in light of the situation, be a bit tollerant. We finally need to get a clue and build sufficient prisons and psychiatric hospitals to house dangerous individuals for the safety of our society and then change/enforce laws to keep them there. Then provide mental health treatment and enforce mandatory treatment programs for those who can be safely maintained in the community with treatment. As a mental health therapist for the past nearly 30 years I see daily how unsafe we all are daily and are totally obvlious to it. It is actually a miracle there are not more such tragedies. Okay. Rant over.

Just a few hours after the execution of Zheng Minsheng in neighboring Fujian Province,[5] in Leizhou,[6] Guangdong another knife-wielding man named Chen Kangbing, 33 (陈康炳)[7] at Hongfu Primary School wounded 16 students and a teacher.[4] Chen Kangbing had been a teacher at a different primary school in Leizhou;[7] he was sentenced to death by a court in Zhanjiang in June.[8]
On April 29 in Taixing,[3] Jiangsu, 47-year-old Xu Yuyuan went to Zhongxin Kindergarten[9] and stabbed 28 students, two teachers and one security guard;[4] most of the Taixing students were 4 years old.[10]
On April 30, Wang Yonglai used a hammer to cause head injury to preschool children in Weifang,[3] Shandong, then used gasoline to commit suicide by self-immolation.[4]
[edit]May 2010

An attacker named Wu Huanming (吴环明), 48, killed seven children and two adults and injured 11 other persons with a cleaver at a kindergarten in Hanzhong, Shaanxi on May 12, 2010;[3] early reports were removed from the internet in China, for fear that mass coverage of such violence can provoke copycat attacks.[3][11] The attacker later committed suicide at his house; he was the landlord of the school,[12] Shengshui Temple private kindergarten, and had been involved in an ongoing dispute with the school administrator about when the school would move out of the building.[12]
On May 18, 2010 at Hainan Institute of Science and Technology (海南科技职业学院), a vocational college in Haikou, Hainan, more than 10 men[13] charged into a dormitory wielding knives around 2:30 am;[14] after attacking the security guard and disabling security cameras, 9 students were injured, 1 seriously.[14] The local men attacked the dorm in an act of revenge and retaliation against college students following conflict the previous day at an off-campus food stall in which 4 students were injured, for a total of 13.[15]
[edit]August 2010

On 4 August 2010, 26-year-old Fang Jiantang (方建堂) slashed more than 20 children and staff with a 60 cm knife, killing 3 children and 1 teacher, at a kindergarten in Zibo, Shandong province. Of the injured, 3 other children and 4 teachers were taken to the hospital. After being caught Fang confessed to the crime; his motive is not yet known.[16]
[edit]August 2011

Eight children, all aged four or five,[17] were hurt in Minhang District, Shanghai when an employee at a child-care centre for migrant workers slashed them with a box-cutter.[18]
[edit]September 2011

In September 2011, a young girl and three adults taking their children to nursery school were killed in Gongyi,[19] Henan by 30-year-old Wang Hongbin with an axe.[20] Another child and an adult were seriously wounded but survived.[21] The suspect is a local farmer who is suspected of being mentally ill.[22]

I'm not for violence period but these type of personal and vicious attacks seem even worse...a meat cleaver? Box cutter? I'd rather be shot. Am I missing your point?
You are only proving the point more that the survival rate is higher from knife and cleaver attacks vs a gun attack. Sure people will still die but the casualties will be fewer.

except that there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that tighter gun control leads to less violent crime. places like Chicago, NY, LA etc; with the strictest gun control laws in the country have the highest violent crime rates. gun control laws are like locks..............they keep honest people honest. to think a trigger lock law, or firearm ban would have prevented what happened in that school is beyond naive.

drugs are illegal and we have plenty of laws again using, owning, or transporting them, plus spend billions a year to keep them out of peoples hands. how's that been working out?

Unbelievable, I have a feeling the next few years is going to be worse. Praying for the family's. This country is going down hill fast. American values and god keep getting pushed aside. God bless and help this country.

It's so depressing to turn on the TV right now or to view any internet news. All sad news, no happy news. To make things worse, it's right before Christmas.

The media is blowing up this killer like some bad guy star and making everyone else's Christmas sad. Every station, every channel, every internet news is covering this tradgedy. All the media wants are views.

How about some Christmas music, parades, cookies. Let us see some cheer the rest of the season.

It's not naive at all. Take a looks at the UK they have strict gun laws and one of the lowest gun homocide rate in the world. There is clearly a corrolation between strict laws and homocides.

RE: The Media
CC: The shootings

People are going to do this because of the fame that they receive upon checkout, and because of the ease of use to get a deadly weapon in the states. 10k + deaths to firearms in the states last year, 58 in canada.

Guns are safe. *cough* FWIW stopping a nutcase with a knife is a bit easier than a nutcase with a gun.
