Hyundai/Kia caught over stating mileage
I recall we suspected that internally when I was at GM. Turns out it was true.
Some 40 mpg rated cars are dropping to 37 and 38 mpg. I guess being on a roll wasn't quite enough for them. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2012...er=rss&emc=rss

The Optima hybrid and sonata hybrid have been proven to be highly over rated as well.

I can't help but wonder if/when we'll see similar news come out about the new Altima.

I believe Soul is dropping from 34 MPG to 28. Which is a pretty big difference.

Something I don't understand..... I had a 1981 VW pickup that HONESTLY would get 40+mpg easily with that sweet little 4cyl diesel engine. Dad would get much better than that with his Jetta diesel... That was 30 years ago.
I know big brother has his thumb on auto makers, but it seems like we're going backwards. Full disclosure... it did 0-60 in 7 minutes, but still... what's wrong with this picture?

Emissions standards, increasing vehicle weight due to crash safety, etc. Plus you're talking diesels vs. gasoline.

But not just diesels were responsible for high fuel eco. VW beatles got crazy mileage too, I know its not the most efficient and environmentally friendly. And so did many of the older vehicles from Europe.
The weight gained from regulations is most likely the biggest offender after California. |

Makes you wonder if we are at a pinnacle of what gas engines can do?

Safety regulations do hurt fuel economy a bit, but one thing that isn't regulated is the demand for more power. Engines today are 2 to 3 times more powerful than they were 30 years ago, that doesn't do much to improve fuel economy. Also, consumers demand more and more features, and more and more comfort, and more and more space. That adds a lot of weight Fuel economy is something that has always been asked, but despite what people say in focus groups, its rarely been demanded by the consumer when they vote with their wallet at the dealership.

Hyundai got caught trying to game the system. Its no different than when Toyotas all suddenly made less power than advertised a few years ago.

I would rather a company underestimate by one or two mpg and surprise people when they do better than advertised.
