What is it with people saying "6 speed"?

It seems like every other post from people saying what they ordered puts "6 speed" up there like it is some sort of special option. I don't understand why anyone bothers to mention that since all of the Camaros are 6 speed. Sorry if I am missing something, but it just seems sort of odd and repetitive.

Because for years they didn't want to give it up.

Cost more to have more gears. When it costs more then some money goes somewhere. If the money does not go to people that sell the car then they never bother.

Car biz starts going tango uniform and they are all like "oh excrement.. we better give 6 speed".

Almost a too little too late. From a domestic industry thing.

Old habits die hard. The manual trannies always had one more gear than the autos. When someone referred to the amount of gears, people would know immediately if you had a stick.

It's a habit, and it comes from the fact that up untill very recently most car companies made their automatics with only 4 speeds. And, for the longest time, the F-bodies and the Corvette were the only cars in the world with a 6 speed manual (the 1989 Corvette ZR-1 debuted the first 6 speed manual, and then the 1993 Camaro and Firebird Formula/TA with the 350 got it).

Untill then, all manuals were either 4 or 5 speed and autos were either 3 or 4 speed.

So, when talking about a Camaro, TA, or Corvette, the question beginning in the early 1990's was "did you get the automatic or 6 speed?" instead of auto or manual.

Obviously, since both transmissions on the new Camaro are 6 speeds, to those who haven't been into the lingo very long its confusing. To us, when we say "6 speed" we mean manual.

Well not always I have a friend that has a 50's Ford 4x4 truck with 3 speed manual on the column.

It still runs too. He pulls new trucks out of the ditch when they get stuck.

Car history is not pointless. GM spent a lot of money on factory upgrades. The 6 speed is a main 5th Generation Vehicle Component.

How is that pointless?

I was not referencing the heritage as pointless, just the initial topic of discussion. So what if people reference 6sp or not... I know I do not lose sleep over it. JMO
