One thing about hate about the driving system, here in the U.S. It should be a demand, to make sure all drivers know how to respond to situations like this, and what NOT to do - which is panic. That is main reason, why most get into accidents - both from being lazy and panic.
When you're train to get your pilot license, they do this exact training. |

What is hilarious to me is that for all the laughing at the "moron" for not simply taking his key out of the ignition, you would think that people on a car forum would know you CANT take the key out of the ignition while the car is running. Try it yourself one time and get back to me as to who is so smart.
As for the emergency brake crowd. Take your car out to a deserted air strip. Give it WOT and maintain WOT then pull the ebrake and see if it will stop your car while in WOT. The guy wasns't running from police, he called 911 because his car was a runaway train. He states that he tried changing gears to no effect. You can see that even when he barrells into the emergency out of control vehicle lane, his car is barely slowed down. Have any of you ever hit one of these? Do you know how much speed you have to be carrying to simply not be dead stopped by one of these? Let me get this straight. You think random dude, driving who WASN'T being persued by cops at first decides. Let me call 911, fake a problem with my car for 25 miles, hit a cop in the rear to finally stop, is faking it? As compared to simply something went wrong with his car. Are we butt hurt because its a pontiac (GM) product? |

Oh I get it. If you listen to the police officer in the 911 call you hear him say. "Our cars are goverened to 100 mph and he's pulling away from us." So you think swerving around traffic at probably 110-120 mph, losing all power steering would be a good idea? Let me ask you this. Did he hurt anyone? Would he of if, while evading traffic he lost all power steering? Chances go way up. I'd say that he did the people around him a giant favor by not disengaging his power steering. |

Also, no I don't think losing power steering at those speeds, as he was swerving around traffic would of been the best idea. Did you see the video where he barely missed a car as he went slamming into the emergency lane. No power steering in that situation and he doesn't clear that car. Instead he smashes into it. |

I had my aftermarket cruise control malfunction on a car one time and I couldn't slow down or disengage it at 70mph. I turned off the ignition and stopped on the side of the road. I had no trouble controlling or stopping the car. And this was on a Chevrolet. So I know if you act as soon as you discover the problem you can safely stop the vehicle.

Either way, the guy wasn't evading police. He did a damn fine job of not causing an accident or injuring other people. Even had the police aware of the situation who were able to block off further traffic. Guy gets a huge thumbs up for me. |

Power steering is to help turn the wheels at slow speeds. At high speeds you need very little assistance to turn the wheel. I have driven without power steering and it isn't as crazy or difficult as you think. Plus, this whole issue would be moot if he had a stick shift. Just push the clutch in and drop to neutral.
If I were in this situation, my first reaction would be to turn the key to the OFF position. Then drop to neutral. No harm would ever come to me or my car or anyone else for that matter. |
