i would think that if the motor is running at a constant speed for generator power a diesel motor would be the best way to go. High torque at lower rpms plus more fuel efficient.

This is similar to the drivetrain in a Fisker Karma. The IC engine only drives a generator. All power to the wheels is from two 150KW electric motors.
