Took my 12 zl1 from Chicago to Boston and thought on the way I hit a bird or something because in the garage it smelled like something died in the front of the car. Never found anything but removed the coolant cap and that was the source of the smell......the coolant smells terrible.

If you keep smelling oil something it's coming from somewhere. I haven't smelled anything like oil burning coming from mine.

The strange thing is, I don't smell it all the time. The times I have gotten the odor is after a good long drive, about 1 to 2 hours.

I am at 1600 miles and I have smelled oil a couple times right after a run up to roughly 4-5000 rpm. The oil smell is faint and only evident in the cabin area. It is evident for a couple minutes then dissipates. I don't smell it outside as I open the door of the car. When I open the hood to trace it down I smell nothing and I don't see any drips under the car or on the lift. VIN # 1393. ????????

Something is going on here with oil odor being detected in the car cabin after a hard acceleration.

GM, please help on this.

One of you guys that are smelling oil should install an oil catch can and see if your smell goes away. It may not but it still is a good idea to have a catch can. Get in touch with Tracy at www.revxtreme.com

I pondered the same thing. That extremely small factory catch can is probably the reason you guys are smelling oil after a hard drive. Get one of those nice big units from Rev Xtreme and see if that cures the smell issue.

Please let us know if the smell continues to occur after the break-in period of 1500 miles!

It may not be so easy to find the smell under the hood. When my Mustang had the same problem I'd rush to open the hood, but if the cooling fan was running the smell wouln't be there.

I thought of the same thing last night after having followed the thread from the beginning, but several of you are already all over it.
It'll be interesting to see if the catch can cures the issue.

Please keep us all posted. I'm particularly interested because of what happened to my ZL1 right after the break-in period. You can refer to my lengthy forum titled "Serious ZL1 Defects". Keep in mind, my issue may be an one and only, but I'm curious to see if it happens with any other ZL1's. My VIN is #1526.
