Car show question.

My dad had a 78 Limited addition Firebird when he was younger. I heard he was the coolest guy in town back in the day bc of his car. At some point he decided to sell it because he was going to have his first kid (my sister).

I see the same car at car shows sometimes. It's a gorgeous car. He always ask me to talk to the owners to see how long they had it and ask them about it. I know he misses having his car.

I was curious...If I see one at a car show again would it be a complete insult to ask the owner if they were willing to sell it? I would love to buy my dad his car back before he passes. I would sell my Camaro if I could make this happen for him.

I believe it looked much like this.

I can't speak for people who show their cars as I never did that. I used to have a pretty nice 1980 Z28 though. I'd often find notes under my wiper blades with people's phone number and a note asking me to call them if I wanted to sell it. It would actually happen a lot. Felt proud, not insulted. Worse that happens is they smile and say "no".

just tell them the story you told us. It's more of a sentimental thing than a pompous request and that your curious if they'd contemplate selling it? Whats the worst they can say, no?

believe me i know all about the sentiment of a father and a car he loved and regret losing. My dads first car was a 65 mustang, hunter/forest/puke green in color but he loved the car and eventually repainted it a bright candy red. He had an electrical fire in the dash and ended up sending her to a scrap yard. Eventually my brother and i planned on restoring one and possibly giving him a 65 stang for his 65th birthday....but for now...my camaro will have to do!

My dad still talks about his '61 Pontiac all the time. We go to car shows together, him in his '32 3 window coupe & me in my SS, and he keeps a look out for it. I think he would sell my mom for that car, lol! If you are not worried about finding the exact car but one that looks like it, try auto magazines. They have a lot of classics for sale in the back. I would love to buy my dad his Pontiac but he wants THAT car back and no way of finding the vin #. And as far as asking people at shows, tell them the story about your dad, if they arent selling, they may know someone that is.

Good luck! And dont sell the Camaro, sell your stang

By all means ask. Telling them the story will give empathy towards your reasoning. Remember, people that have cars in shows have the cars for more than just transportation. The car in itself is an extension of the person. Soul stirring if you will. In order for the majority to "sell" the car and not leave it as inheritance, they must feel that the car would go to a good home. Everyone is right about asking at the very least. There is a lot of car clubs out there and tremendous networking within them. A lot of good people too that would be happy to help just to see another car taken care of.

This, totally. What a great thing to want to do for your dad, he would surely be thrilled to have his old bird back!

Simply inquire if it's for sale. Make no mention of the sentimental value. Those words increase the sellers value.

Owners of cars at shows always get stupid requests about selling their car from people that have no clue what they are worth or any serious intentions of buying.

I would simply say that your father would like to have one like he had back, and you want to buy one for him. Then ask if the car is for sale, or if he knows anyone that has one for sale or where you could get one. That way it looks like your are serious about buying without being willing to overpay for that particular car.
