Dumbest argument on the internet

This argument is almost used exclusively in car arguments and it goes like this:

Version 1: Article raves on about a new car and its amazing specs and performance. Car guy writes a comment to the article and says if he spends $40k (difference in price) on his $20k car, he can beat the car that’s been reviewed.

Version 2: article raves on about a new car and its amazing specs and performance. Car guy writes a comment to the article and says some other car (that he doesn’t own) performs better.

Why argument #1 is stupid:
  • Who cares? Talk is cheap – it’s one thing to talk about spending $40k on a piece of junk, it’s another to actually do it.
  • Even if they did spend $40k in mods, what the heck does that have to do with the car being reviewed in the article?
  • How do mods diminish the merits of the car being reviewed?
  • What’s the purpose of bringing up the piece of junk that supposedly could be modified better with $40k? So people can praise and want the said piece of junk?

Why argument #2 is stupid:
  • Why the heck do they care to compare a car they don’t even own? Why does it make them feel “better” to do so?
  • Even if they do own the car they are comparing with, what the heck does that have to do with the car being reviewed in the article?
  • How does the performance of some other car (usually in a different price bracket) diminish the merits of the car being reviewed?
  • What’s the purpose of bringing up some other car? So people can praise the other car?

The human ego makes people do the most amazingly stupid things.

Maybe Camaro5 could sponsor a proper way to have a discussion within a thread for those that join so as to avoid conflict and leave out personal attacks and how to identify them. Teach people the proper methods of debate so as not to offend and stick to the facts.....LOL, jk...yea like that will ever happen.

People can express their opinions on whatever they feel is important to them whether they are right or wrong. If you get irritated by the repetetive nature of the debate, don't get involved. Your rant is not going to change something that is human nature and that's been around since we've been in existence. This, IMO, is part of the process that leads to changes, although it might be too slow for some. of course at times we feel like that guy in Sir Nukes post above.

Oh come now ... there are far dumber arguments on the internet (its a rather big place you know). Just go to YouTube & you'll find lots of examples of people making much more ridiculous arguments (for a double dose of dumb arguments, try some videos 'revealing' a conspiracy -they'll be in the vid and the comments). Compared to that sort of BS, those two examples you mentioned seem to come from geniuses.

OP in violation of proper camaro5.com signature rules.

I agree though.

Let me add to the first list.

* You can modify a volkswagon rabbit to run 11s. Who cares? The car is being reviewed as stock.

The dumbest argument on the internet is about two extremely expensive similarly priced (4-seat) sports cars, made by different companies, which both offer slight variations in the method it uses to accelerate.....and then trying to decide "which one" is better, when both of them have the SAME level of appeal in general. (and each car has it's own specific set of flaws as well.)

Then the debate gets even worse when "car company A" has fans that are so biased towards what "they" like, that they take the name of the vehicle the "dont like" to something derogatory....and they think "this" enhances or is productive (on a technical level) when it comes to their discussion of the differences between the two.

Similar arguement that goes on for DECADES: manual and automatic transmission. V6 vs V8. OHV vs OHC. IRS vs Rigid axle. natural oil or synthetic.

I think arguing about the dumbest argument on the Internet has just become the dumbest argument on the Internet............
