That's cool that you were able to get those things to remember him by. I only met my grandfather once (dysfunctional part of my family goes back many generations), at a Green Beret reunion. I was too young to truly appreciate the stories I heard then, but old enough to remember so I can appreciate them now.

I grew up listening to every story I could from veterans of WW II. And I never stopped listening as I got older. But the voices have gotten fewer and fewer.
When I was a kid, I remember going to parades and watching the veterans march. There was always a large formation of WW II vets preceded by a smaller, and older, contingent of WW I vets. Now, I realize that all of those doughboys are gone. And soon, all to soon, the WW II guys will be gone too. I don't know why, but I felt some kind of comfort with those guys around. Like I could always hear one more story that you'll never see in any book. It was a way to touch history, and really be aware of how real it was. Something the books couldn't give you. I fear younger generations will lose that connection when the last voice falls silent. And I think they need it more than they know.

Hopefully they will listen to the 'Middle East' vets. I just hope they will really listen and not just hear.

Sadly they didn't want to hear what we had to say. They spat on us and called us names like. "Baby killers" . I know you have heard this story from many other Vietnam Vets, but it's been 40 Plus years. I still can't forget getting off the Plane in Seattle Washington and having to go into the Men's room to take off my uniform and hide it in my suitcase. I know I sound bitter I work everyday to let this go. I'm so glad the troops come home today to a Friendly home coming. Maybe we as a Nation did listen! Time will tell. Peace and GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Its a tragedy the way the Vietnam vets were treated. Hopefully society has learned from their mistakes of the past and it will never happen that way again. All those that have served particulary those in combat deserve nothing but thanks and respect.

I think part of the reason people have gone out of their way to recognize veterans of recent conflicts, is a direct result of the collective shame that people of this nation feel for the treatment that returning Vietnam veterans endured. I am glad that we as a people have moved in this direction. The part that bothers me is that you can get a pretty good idea from certain people's political stances and their ages, that they may well have been among those inflicting said treatment. Yet no one will own up to their behavior. I even regret that some of these cowards that Skip was forced to evade, may well be in positions of authority today.
I know it may be a few years late, but: Welcome home Skip. Thank you for serving your country, and preserving the freedom that I so dearly appreciate.

Thanks to ALL! I didn't mean to go looking for Praise or a Pat on the Back. I was just sharing some feelings. Things hit home now and then and back come a flood of memories. I many times have asked myself why I lived and 55,000 other's didn't? I haven't invented a cure for Cancer or done anything really Special lest not I can think of Someday I will get the courage to go to the Wall in Washington and Pay my respects. For those of you who have gone! Thanks Now lets CHANGE the SUBJECT Is the Stanley Cup going to be WON tonight?
