Don't make the mistake of reading too much into that .98g figure.

On a skidpad, the torsen seems to hold the car from max performance but in the real world it creates a mechanical safety net so spirited driving is very confidence inspiring.

The 24.2 second figure 8 time at .8g's is much more telling of the cars capabilities. The 2011 gt500 put up 1g in c&d's test. Not a big deal; different setup is all.

Here's a pic of the 2011 svtpp's states ala c&d.

Here's c&d's zl1 test.

We all know the zl1 out does the 2011 svtpp by a good bit on a handling course.

I think we will all be impressed by the 2013 gt500 on a handling course side by side with a zl1. Time will tell.

Right now, the Mustang GT500 is Ford's "halo" car for better or worse.
I'm hoping they bring a successor to the 2006 GT "40" back into production.
While not totally dominent in the Corvette/GT/Viper war's of that time, that car is pure sex.
It was always intended as a 100th Anniversary limited edition, and that exactly what is was. 2 years and it was gone. Not easily forgotten though.

Insiders in Detroit all know what the other team is "working on" in their skunkworks, to think otherwise is naive'. And what the heck, GO AHEAD and compare against the 2012 GT500... In a drag-race, man, it's a driver's race, very close, slight edge to ZL1 because of launch-control, but stock 2011-2012 GT500's run 117-118 in the traps day-in-day-out.

And I don't see GM countering with a 715hp ZL1 for 2013, which is what they'd have to produce in order to just EQUAL the 2013 GT500's power/weight ratio.

Let's be realistic, they came out with every bullet they had in their gun, that allowed them to arrive in the mid-$50K price range. GM could make more power (a la ZR1), but the mill would add alot more money to the car, and then they'd be spending boatloads of cash re-calibrating chassis and re-durability-testing a car that they just FINISHED spending all those development dollars on.
The problem is all you care about is a drag race and yes as I already said the gt 500 wins...maybe I'm too deluded I want to see what happens when they both get tested going around a track. Why is that ignored by soon to be gt 500 owners. I bought a zl1 because it's an all around performer which it is. The jury is still out on whether the gt 500 is.

Ok, fine. Then the three hour program that was on Speed Channel Sunday night about Carroll Shelby and his life and cars was all bullshit then.

You all are right, I'm wrong.

Happy Motoring!!!

Yea, I was wrong I just got through reading about them. Seems they are built on the same assemby line. You could have a V6 Mustang Then a Mustang Gt, and then again a Shelby, The only things they are changing is the packages the Car is built with.

But who is suppling the packages, All of GM's are in house.

He is on point with this statement here. Ford with (SVT) has an inside group of guys who help develop their super high performance cars. They are not outside tuners like Saleen,Bosch,Hennessy or Lingenfelter. Mopar has SRT, Benz has AMG, BMW has M series and so on. I am not sure what Chevy's relationship is (now) with SLP, but their cars use to be production models? SLP was and still is VERY performance minded (straight line) we could use a little of that right about now

Just hoping this release slows down the price gouging on the ZL1

Yeah, you are wrong. In the 60s that is what they did, but not with any current GT500 cars produced. Shelby did that with the most recent GT350, but that is a base 5.0 GT with all of his goodies on it, and marked up to $70k+

I'll give you this........a stock 2013 Ford GT500 is going to give a stock C6 Z06 (Z07 is a performance package for the Z06) a run for it's money in a drag race and to a Vmax run....662 HP will give you that. On a road race course with equally skilled drivers, stock for stock, the GT500 won't be even close enough to the Z06's rear bumper to read the license plate number....that's what 600 lbs of extra weight gives you.
Jamaal stated that the shelby is faster around a road course than the ford gt. The top speed of the ford gt is faster than the shelby. Though they stated with the shelby there was some reason they stopped at 202 I don't remember what it was but lets just leave it at 202. And the ford gt I think either beats or is the same as z06/z07. So no even with the 600 pounds of extra weight the shelby will keep up.

Now if your talking about lap after lap after lap lol well thats a different story. Heavy supercharged cars don't do well on road courses long term. So then yes probably as you say the shelby won't be able to read the license plate on the z06. Though they ran like 40 laps in Atlanta no problem on shelby's with the track pack. I wish they did a comparison to how long a shelby without the track pack could last before overheating. But for a hot lap the shelby will hold its own fine against the zo6.

But thats why I prefer the zr1. But with an upgraded interior since it sucks.

the shelby will obliterate the zl1. Ford has stated that the shelby is faster around a road course than the ford gt. And so far Ford hasn't lied about anything they have hinted at in past months. So unless you think a zl1 which is on par with a 12 shelby is magically faster than a ford gt then the jury is settled.

The only competition left is the z06/z07 and the zr1 from chevy in response to ford.

case dismissed.
