What's up guys. I'm new to the site, I want a V8 Camaro and I'm currently the owner of a 2005 V6 Ford Mustang. woot woot lol. The thing is that i'm a college student without a job so i don't have a steady income, although i'm looking for a job.
I hate to say it but i may be willing to trade in my Mustang and pay for the rest in order to get a V8 Camaro (i won't be paying in off in full but i want to give a big down payment). My question is if you guys know of any good paying jobs that a college student can get (i'm a junior)? Please help By the way, I realize that if i find a good job i'll have to put in a lot of hours in to get more money but i'm fine with that because i'm a pretty well rounded student. But by the time the convertible Camaro comes out, I'll be graduating (in late April of '09) and as a present my mother will probably be willing to help me out. But I want to be able to save as much as possible so i won't have to ask her for much

Try getting a paid intership at a company that you plan on working with after you graduate. That way you'll get paid, and experience so by the time you graduate, you'll have some money and a great resume set up.

Man, I could give you a sh!tload of recommendations, but let's narrow it down a bit. First of all, what's your major? Second, what is the minimum dollar amount you have in mind from a "good job"? Also, what type of work are you willing to do? Are you strictly white collar, or is blue collar work something you will willing to do temporarily? Do you know any type of trade, or enjoy doing certain things?
- - - I'll also list a few things that pay relatively well and require little or no experience. All you have to do is interview relatively well. -A sales person at Nordstrom (they'll work with your schedule) -A sales person at Saks 5th Avenue (Also will work with your schedule) -A sales person at Neiman Marcos -A sales person at Barney's -A sales person at Bloomingdales -A forklift operator at Lowes/Home Depot (get certified first) The retail stores listed will give you a decent commission rate. On average, you'll get about $14-$16 per hour. If you're a hustler you'll get $18+ I know a few that were making $75k per year. One thing you must know, don't worry about hurting people's feelings or stepping on toes. All the sales people are extremely cut-throat and will swindle customers from you, so you'd better do it to them first. Oh, and you must own a suit and tie. Very important, but it's not necessary to spend a ton of money on one. Just as long as it's fitted. The home Depot/ Lowes route is decent, but you'll likely only make at best, $16.00 per hour. The first options are nice, because you'll be working with a bunch of clean cut guys and attractive girls. As long as you can shave, get a hair cut and smell nice, they'll like you. Oh, be energetic and smile a lot. Be very (overly) nice. The retail jobs also make you do what I like to call an "honesty test". Lie through your teeth the entire way through it. For instance, if they give you a question that asks "Have you ever taken any office supplies home with you?" Say no. Just B.S. your way through it. I have other excellent jobs in mind as well, just let me know a little more about what you prefer and I'll let you know how to get in. |

@ Mindz
Yep...I'll be interning during my senior year (in August). Thanx Do u have any ideas for a job that i should go for now? I filled out an application at the post office but they're really tight about hiring. Also, i'll be applying for the position of a waitor to nice restaurants like Olive Garden, Romano's Macaroni Grill, and Red Lobster tommorow. Quote:
But i'm a Criminal Justice major, my previous jobs were at a car wash and a movie theater (i was a concessions clerk and usher), I'm ok with working either white or blue collar, and I'm a great people person. Also, I'm looking for somewhere that'll pay $10+ an hour if possible (the more the better lol) and somewhere that'll work with my class schedule. Also, I figure that you think that i'm still in Miami because you recommended Bloomingdales, Saks 5th Avenue, etc but i'm actually going to school in Tallahassee, FL. EDIT: I believe Bloomingdales is owned by Macy's and there's one of those at the mall out here

I was right there in your shoes....criminal justice major and all.
I worked as a waiter...moved up to trainer, headwaiter, then bartender and eventually manager for Pappasitos Restaurant. If you want flexible hours ( for the most part), get to have fun, and make good money, that is the type of job for you. I'll tell you this. The type of person you are will reflect in how much money you make. If you want the cash and are willing to work your butt off, there's ton's o' cash to be made in the restaurant biz. Before you go grab a job anywhere, remember...the higher priced restaurants will make you more money....but also require more from you. In other words, DON'T slack off working at a great steak restaurant where you could easily be making $150 to $200 a night vs. working (and no offense) at (better yet, I'll leave names out) that restaurant. Work somewhere with a fun atmosphere. You'll be there EVERY DAY. I did it for 6 years. It was good to me and I made great cash. But, it was to get me through school. If you want it, again, you'll go for it. But, it'll take some work. Go find that restaurant that goes on a wait every night, check out the type of people that go there, the menu prices, and work it from there....I think you know what I mean! Oh, and thread moved to more proper location...off topic discussions... |

Oh, If you don't mind me asking, what carrer did u pursue in the Criminal Justice field?

You CAN make that cash working at the right place. A regular server could go home making $50 on a Mon night. If he/she stayed late after cuts, he/she could make $70-$100. It all, again, depends on where you work and your work attitude. But, yeah...you could bring home $200 on a Fri and Sat night easy.
Oh, and take a look at the little smilies in my sig...I'm a police officer. Actually, there's 4 on the site including me and possibly a 5th...just hadn't found out if his TCLEOSE was for becoming an officer or not. I don't mind the asking at all. Dad was FBI for 23 years. Brother is a game warden out in the boonies, grandpa retired at the rank of Captain for Chicago PD. It runs in da family. |

@ smike, Nordstrom is not the place you want to work as a sales rep. You'll have to update your wardrobe every few months because you have to be as trendy as the clothes you sell. Both my g/f and I have worked there. My g/f spent about half her paycheck every month buying new clothes because work told her to update her wardrobe. She likes to shop but I actually overheard work telling her she needed to fit in with the merchandise.

Also, King Cash, speaking of fragrances and jewelry, you could work as a fragrance model (don't ask me why they call them that--you'll never get your picture taken) at any of your stores. They'll get on the rounds of $14.00 per hour, work maybe 15 hours per week, and get a tom of free fragrances. All you have to do is go to a Macy's (you don't want to work for Macy's, it's very different from Bloomingdales) and find out who the fragrance Account Executives are for Fragrance Companies like Calvin Klein, Zirh, Burberry, etc... and get a name and telephone number for them. They're ALWAYS looking for people. Besides, it's super easy money, you meet tons of women, and you get lots of free fragrances. Jewelry stores are always hiring as well, and you start out slow, but you can make decent money once you sell a few items. Again, super easy money. You do want to work for a corporate Jeweler like Jared, Samuels, Gordon's, Zales, etc... Blue collar, go for the hardware stores. They're always hiring as well. It is a crappy job, but I know a ton of people that are able to make a living doing it. They are not, however, very accommodating to your school schedule. Also, TAG is right about the whole steakhouse thing. Work for a nice restaurant, not something stupid like Friday's, Applebee's or Denny's. Go for more the Saltgrass Steakhouse type. If you'd like a career in the FBI, you'll hate me for saying this, but get in to the ROTC program at your school and continue your Criminal Justice degree. Then do the Army Reserve. They'll work with your school schedule as well. As an FBI field officer you'll benefit greatly from combat training. If you prefer the more investigative route, you'll still benefit from it. Just something to think about. |
