Does anyone know the process in which an engine is certified? Is A motor delivered to the testing site by the manufacturer and the testing done on one example, or is this done with several motors and an 'average' taken of the sample? What would stop a manufacturer from building a 'ringer' motor just to garner the free publicity from all the scuttlebutt being thrown out of every automotive forum, blog, news organization, and nervous notes jotted down by insurance adjusters everywhere? I am not downplaying the results...just curious. To make over 600 horses and avoid the guzzler tax...

Unlikely, it's better to promise and over-deliver. Ford knows the first thing GT500 guys are going to do is take their pile of trash to a dyno and see what they are really getting.

You mean like we're seeing here in the ZL1 section?

Come on, GM said they targeted the GT500 but yet, they didn't let the media run it against one? They talked all the smack but when it came time to it, ummmm lets pick on its little brother instead. 2.5 sec difference between two NA cars would be huge after a lap but it is NOTHING between a NA car vs. FI car. The NA car will eventually catch and pass the FI car after a few laps..it is called heat soak on the FI car. People tend to conveniently forget about that too.
GO BACK TO VIR RESULTS...and which car is Ford's "Track Star"? Which one has run the quicker times under similar circumstances, on a similar/same track? Lightening Lap results say it's the BOSS LS...so far...

Now, even though the GT 500 is boosted to 100+ more horsies than the BOSS, we can't compare a ZL1 to a BOSS...ONLY to a GT 500... Oh really?!

Credibility, my friend, suffers when your requests and logic FAIL in the face of previous experiences...

Again, you can put a JATO on a jalopey and, in a straight line, TADA! "Look at that time slip!!!" [gasp-gasp]

WE DON'T KNOW, for sure...do we? ANY of us...DO WE?!

But don't change the basis of comparison NOW, after Ford itself has recognized (to this point) that, REGARDLESS of motor-vation, the BOSS LS is KNOWN as "Ford's TRACK STAR"...and frankly, I'll be surprized that a JATO-equipped nose-heavy Stang will better the BOSS by very much. Again, it's NOT what's under the hood that will automatically win on a road course...it's HOW you get around a road course that COUNTS. IRS...MRC...305s...V-I-C-T-O-R-Y??...even spotted 80 hp and 300+ lbs...

"Yeah, but what about 1/4-mile???" Hang your hats on THAT one...that's your BEST CHANCE.

Ford has experience doing EXACTLY that...they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar about a dozen years ago with a Cobra-Stang that simply didn't deliver. Had to suspend production/sale. Had to "recalibrate" 'em ALL after being threatened with Class Action...

I doubt they're dumb enough to try that again...

Lol @ the haters ...

"track road car" lol I bet CLOSE TO 0 % of ZL1 owners are going to "autocross" there 50k cars.

I will go on a hump and say the ZL1 IS NOT A TRACK CAR , and if a camaro guy wants a TRACK CAR THEN HE WILL GET THE COPO TRACK-ONLY NON STREET LEGAL CAMARO.

I love these threads .... Some guys still think the ZL1 is the winner in this matchup.

If your a camaro guy and want the best factory camaro -- get the zl1
If your a mustang guy and want the baddest stang -- get the 500

If you want what could possibly be the most powerful muscle car of all time , and supercar horsepower for 1/4 the price -- get the 500

What are you considering the "track" here? If you're calling "track" the autocross or road course, you're kinda backwards here.

Multiple trips to the dynos by owners and shops....screaming over a 12.5 pass.

The same thing that Mustang guys are being roasted for the Camaro guys are doing the same thing.

It's all stupid.....if you're brand loyal buy that one.

If you're objective, I don't see how you can't go with the GT500.

Fprd, of all manufacturers, would not do that again, remember the 99 Cobra fiasco? It wuickly goes bad and is NEVER a good idea.

Well, wisenheimer, a COPO is to Camaro what a Cobra Jet is to Stang...

Speaking of the Cobra Jet. One just recently set the NHRA record for stock eliminator class running a 8.95 @ 153mph.
