These are truly exciting times, and could quite possibly be the end of these high hp beasts...

Way to go Chevy and Ford!!! Hats off to you guys for making this happen...
Agreed! And to be clear, it wasn't my intent to insult the ZL1. I actually like the car. It looks great and performs VERY well.

I just happen to lean a little more toward the GT500 personally.

"One Trick Pony" comes to mind...for SURELY you'll agree the GT 500 stands ZERO chance on a roadcourse vs. the "underpowered/traction-limited/over-weight" ZL1...right? After all, the GT 500 at 550 hp, its stable-mate the BOSS LS kicked its hiney @ VIR...and the lowly under-$40K 1LE beat the Best-handling BOSS...and the ZL1 tramples 'em ALL!

What the Camaro needs is some REAL competition...not some hobby-horse pretend-a-car with the influences of one very old chili-peddler...

Bring 'er to VIR, and let the clocks decide...
It's funny you say this because it seems every tuner it taking their ZL1 to the drag strip not the road course to better performance...

Bottom line is the ZL1 and GT500 are great cars!

Sorry guys but like everyone else who has been keeping up with the GT500 news, I am predicting it is going to be a murder on the strip. I am just waiting to see how well the GT500's stock suspension will do in the roadcourse and if needs the SVT-Performance Package to hang or beat the ZL1. If I didn't already have a GT500, I would buy the new one and keep my supercharged SS but my 2011 GT500 is just so much fun so the SS will go and the ZL1 will take its place as the snake's little mouse to play with.

For brevity's sake, there aren't very many well-known tuner shops within a stone's throw of VIR, while drag strips are generally reasonably local to everyone.

Is the 1/4-mile a valid yardstick? Sure...but no two tracks have the same prep, the same bite, and/or the same air density and ambient temps. So who's doing the "conversions"?

More variables...

Take a gazillion dollar Formula 1 car, or IndyCar (see how Chev's doing?!), or Sprint Cup car to a strip and what happens? Impressive times? No, not really...

I recall a Winston Cup car test at a drag strip: 800+ hp, 3400 lbs., and it ran low 11's. What's that prove? Not much...

Does MRC have a drag race setting, to allow the front suspension to act as though it has light springs and 80/20 or 90/10 shocks? No. Would that hamper a ZL1 from "full weight transfer"? Yes...and if the '13 GT 500 enjoys electronic shocks, it will be even more impeded because so much more, %-wise, of its weight sits over the front wheels, and is unwillingly tranferred to puny 285 tires. "Unhook the front anti-sway bars", they'll say. "Showroom stock" goes out the window. "How about DRs?" Again, mods...

The production ZL1 has been in the hands of the general pubic for about 2 weeks now. Few are broken in. Fewer still have seen a road course.

What's the CHEAPEST and BEST mod, money can buy?

Seat time...

Question for you, have ya seen a production ZL1 time in any roadcourse anywhere or are you still referring to the pre-production versions? There is a difference, whether some wanna admit it or not. Now we are seeing real #s for production ZL1 on the 1/4 mile and they are on par with the current GT500s. What happens if the new GT500 posts a better time at VIR than the ZL1, what are you going to blab about then? Keep an open mind, you will smile more.

Welcome to the internet! 30-40 years ago, it didn't really matter - the driver played a bigger part. Now with the internet, bench racing is what brings in the $$$. Who sells wins!

I suspect though that the ZL1 will outsell the GT500. It looks killer, and therefore has a wider appeal. For the people who really want performance to the nth degree - they can always mod.

Yeah, in the MT article where the ZL1 beat the Boss by 2.5 seconds (not that huge of an amt btw considering), per the notes from the Driver Randy Probst (sp?) the boss was only really down on the Zl1 in 2 areas, power and brakes and guess what, the with the GT500 you are adding over 200 MORE HP and the Brembos on the 13 are bigger and at all 4 wheels, unloke the Boss 302. IMHO, it is a wash for the GT500, sorry guys......

People also tend to conveniently forget in addition to the 136hp Boss deficit, GM also had corners of the track straightened out to obviously give the ZL1's 136hp advantage full use, but the bigger mmmmmmmmm is, there are plenty of current GT500s around but GM only allowed the media to test it against the Boss. Come on, GM said they targeted the GT500 but yet, they didn't let the media run it against one? They talked all the smack but when it came time to it, ummmm lets pick on its little brother instead. 2.5 sec difference between two NA cars would be huge after a lap but it is NOTHING between a NA car vs. FI car. The NA car will eventually catch and pass the FI car after a few laps..it is called heat soak on the FI car. People tend to conveniently forget about that too.

I heard the GT500 now has 6 piston Brembos out front? How many pistons out back?

What does it matter? All the braking power is at the front. I believe it is 80/20%.

The '11/'12 GT500 has HIDs and LED tail lights.

The only affective aero change is a deeper front splitter. A trip to the parts counter will remedy that for the '11/'12. The open upper/lower grilles on the '13 are for additional cooling. But whatever...
