I wouldn't say that. Going 1 size up to cars like the Sonic and you'll see that it shares engines with the even larger Cruze, and yet the smaller Sonic tends to get worse highway economy (at least for the engines that I compared).

I'd blame the slow sales for these cars on the fact that even as a secondary vehicle, these city cars are pretty impractical. And that for the price being asked for these things, you can get a larger car that gets similar fuel economy with far more space. Oh, and a Fit or Fiesta don't look nearly as goofy as an iQ or FourTwo

Smaller cars end up getting worse FE simply due to aerodynamics. There isn't enough car to diffuse the turbulence or something like that. There was an article in Popular Mechanics a few months ago with the Spark explaining this.

There in lies my biggest disappointment with the Sonic. I've driven it and I liked it, but its hard to ignore the fact that the mileage is not what I would expect in my next DD. I plan on possibly financing the next DD so maybe a Cruze?

I'll give the Spark one thing. It doesn't look anywhere near as goofy as the Fortwo and IQ do.

I guarantee that that 67hp 1.0L and 80hp 1.2L would be screaming bloody murder at highway speed. A car running at 3,500 RPM vs 2,500 RPM is going to go through more fuel. Yes aerodynamics do make a difference but so does how the car operates. Case and point the time I drafted a mid-size car from Phoenix to Quartzsite for 137 miles. I averaged 47.1 MPG that trip vs the standard of usually 38 to 41 MPG. Just a matter of aerodynamics, but that said the I10 is 75 MPH. I can get 42 to 44 MPG on the US60 going 65 MPH instead.

Is that the same exact car as the 14 impala in the other thread? maybe it's because of the stance and lack of 2 of the doors but that looks 1000% better than the 4 door version.
