The numbers on a scale tell you how big the model car is in relation to the actual car. The 1 in the 1/x stands for the real car. The number under the dash is the number times that size (the length, width, height etc) was divided by. So the 1/18th scale means that every dimension on the model is exactly (or as close to 18 times) smaller than the real car. Thus the length of the car was divided by 18, the width by 18 etc etc. Therefore the bigger the number, the smaller the car. FYI, Matchbox and Hotwheels are 1/64th the size of the real car.
