Because while the decision was already in the works, there were still plenty of people trying to throw random ideas around to save it. G8 was a matter of too little, too late, and would've best been badged a Chevrolet instead.

As for the Ute/Sportwagon, notice that GM had been very gung-ho about both products...then suddenly reversed course? Many see that as indication that Pontiac's fate had been determined right about then.
