Buick was already well established in China way before the decision was made to can Pontiac. And that decision was made earlier than most people think.

Considering how Buick is currently printing money for GM in both China and North America, I fail to see how it was such a big mistake. In fact most industry analysts agree that Buick in China was probably one of GM's best decisions pre-bankruptcy.

Exactly how far back though? And if that were the case then why market Holden based Buicks as China exclusives? Why not do what they're doing with the Opel Buicks and.. I dunno.. probably run into the price range of the CTS if they did a RWD Zeta Buick, eh?

Don't get me wrong Fen, I know the story, I remember the rationale and do agree with it. I just don't understand what exactly it was about Buick that couldn't have been done to Pontiac to make that brand the market presence in China for GM? Was it that Pontiac and Oldsmobile were too much like Buick and Cadillac clones to fit in?
