Sales Tax Question

Ok guys help me out here.

If I live in Indiana which has a 7% sales tax and if I were to go to Chicago (because there are some killer deals out there due to overstock and economy) which has a 10% sales tax.........

Which one do you pay? I want to say that I would pay the 7% because of where my residence is. However im not positive on that.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks

If you are talking about a new car purchase, most internet dealers charge local tax if you want to drive it home or no tax if it is shipped to your home.

No i would probably drive to chicago and buy it, its only 90 minutes away.

And isnt shipping expensive anyway?

So it sounds like I would pay 7% because thats where the car will be registered, sounds good because i sure as hell didnt want to pay 10%.

We're talking about a 5k difference in sticker price for the same damn vehicle. The reason being is chicago is a big city and im sure they dont sell well right now, economy has hit chicago hard.

+1. I have driven out of town to buy several new and used vehicles. Saved a bunch in the process. Would have saved more if I did not buy anything at all though....

My parents still live in chicago anyway so I can make a day of it.

You will pay the Indiana tax when you register it, no Illinois tax

So I wont pay any tax when I actually buy it? I thought the dealership registers it for you? Isnt that what "tax/title/license" is for???

You can have the dealer do it for you or do it yourself. Either way it gets paid when it is registered in your home state. So it will be in your case the 7%.

If you buy a private party used vehicle you may fall through the cracks and avoid paying any sales tax when you register at the DMV several months later.

People do it all the time to save the $3-6k in sales tax.

Wow never heard of that. You have several months to pay the tax? I will have to consider that if I decide to buy a used car.
