I guess I've never heard that- but with self defense loads it seems you are right.

9mm is cheapest to shoot. .357 sig is the most expensive of the 4 mentioned. There is no one best caliber or every police department in the world would be using it.

Also, a Sig 229 is a heavy gun. I own one in .40. Shoots great but it certainly feels different than my glock 22 in .40. Compare rounds in the same platform if you can. My wife has an S&W SD (full size) in .40. It kicks much more than either the glock 22 or Sig 229 because it is so light weight. It is kinda like taking one engine (the .40 shell) and putting it in different chassis. An LS3 in a pickup will feel different than one in a Camaro which will feel different than one in a Corvette with all else being pretty much the same.

Shoot anything you are interested in and make the choice. Not many people will buy a car without test driving it. Same with guns.

The force you will when you shoot the gun is the same amount of force a person would feel being hit by the round comparatively. People don't go flying when hit by bullets like they do on TV. Other than seeing clothing move, you may not know you even hit them unless they go down. Mental state (drug influence or willpower are big factors) plays a HUGE roll in that too. There are only 3 guaranteed spots that will generate a 1 shot stoppage of a person - brain, spinal cord, or pelvis (if there is enough energy behind the round to break/shatter it). Even then, a shattered pelvis may not stop someone on PCP. It will just impair their mobility. A hit from a 9/357/40/45 will feel like a push to the person. A hit from a .50BMG has so much power it literally blows them apart. How many people have shot deer through the chest cavity and it ran 100s of yards? There is enough oxygen in the blood to keep the brain going for several seconds even if the heart is destroyed. A brain hit is like pulling the power cord of a computer (death). A spinal hit is like taking the keyboard and mouse away (paralyzation) and a pelvis hit is like taking the mouse away (severely impairs mobility but could still get around given the time.)

You should just go 10mm if you want a semi auto pistol. It is rated for hunting black bear and deer. None of the other pistol calibers are although I am sure they could kill either if necessary. It would be my choice of duty gun if I were allowed to carry anything I wanted.

I suppose to be honest, my current intended purpose for the gun is - practice. I also have a .22 pistol but I am trying to get used to good pistol technique etc (especially recovering from recoil). Even though I'd prefer 9mm cost wise, I feel like .40 is a good round for familiarizing myself with recoil (SS sp2022). So maybe, I should just keep what I have currently and get good with it, because the recoil of a .45 and 9mm are probably not as drastic (just different). I feel if I practiced too much with 9mm I'd be...."shocked" by the more substantial rounds.

Once again Blake is spot on.

I also owned a 229 in .40. it was a great gun, but I prefer my glock 22c. Same round, but they shoot so much different. (The sig is not bad mind you, just different.) Heck I prefer my 22c over the new gen 4 glocks also.

Just try out each caliber/gun and decide. Just take the one that YOU prefer/shoot better with, not what someone tells YOU to buy. I'll take a hit with a .22 over a miss with a .44 magnum anyday of the week.

I agree they're all different, and even firing same round in different guns fire in a different way. I've fired Glock, Ruger, Para, in different rounds and liked them all but recoil recovery is different on each, next will trying HK and Sig. I'm sure I'll like those too, but different. I think it's all about experience with different firearms, and depending on use target practice or competition shooting you may like one or the other, and just for kicks you may favour a totally different gun and round. For example I like .45 just because it feels so powerfull when it pops off a cap, but for ultimate accuracy and recovery probably not the best for service weapon or competition shooting.

I'd like to own at least 3-4+ different hand guns in all rounds listed. I've never fired a .10 but I like to see what that's like as well.

1911 .45's have been used in competitions for years and is probably one of if not the most modified and converted handguns in the world.
When it comes to carry weapons, caliber isn't as important as shot placement under stress and being comfortable with you weapon of choice. A bad guy with a .22 can kill you just as fast as a .45 or 10m.m. is he gets rounds off first and is more accurate.
I carry .45 only and have slimmed down my collection to .45/5.56/.308, just a personal choice on my part back when ammo went crazy.
.357 Sig has impressive ballistics and shoots like a 9 m.m. and will probably be one on my next personal purchases

Yea...I gotta figure this out. We have to drive through Illinois...the most anti-gun state in the country.

OK...got some more info for traveling through the Peoples Republic of Illinois.

Found this on their website.

Q. If a non-resident is coming to Illinois to hunt and would like to bring their firearm, how do they legally transport it?

A. Non- residents must be legally eligible to possess or acquire firearms and ammunition in their state of residence. It is recommended that, in order to be in compliance with all statutes, non-residents transport all firearms:

Unloaded, and
Enclosed in a case, and
Not immediately accessible or broken down in a nonfunctioning state.

Q. Is it legal to have ammunition in the case with the firearm?

A. Yes, so long as the firearm is unloaded and properly enclosed in a case.

The USPSA nationals pistol competition is held in Illinois and its no problem having a pistol as long as you comply with the above. Its ashame however, there are 3 states is will NEVER step foot in. Guess which ones they are

I wouldn't go through shitcago no matter what!

LOL...the irony of having the USPSA competition in the most anti-gun state in the union.

I'm not sure we'll have much of a choice but to go through Illinois to get to the fest. I guess I'll just have to lock her up when we drive through.

Just case it and make sure it's unloaded I used to have to deal with this when I crossed the Line from Minn. to Wis. But good OLE GOV. Walker passed Gun Carry law in that state and now i don't have to worry about it

I recently traveled to Indy on my PA license to carry. When I checked their web page/statutes if I remembe correctly it stated Indiana recognizes permits from every state.
