i don't think the problem is carrying a gun into a church...it's trying to sell one in church, that was the first thing that went wrong.

The laws for Concealed Carry in Texas state that if you are asked for your ID by an officer of the law you must immediately disclose that you are armed (if you are) and show your CC license along with your driver's license.
At that point the officer, at his/her disgression, may choose to disarm you. Your firearm is returned to you immediately following the business at hand unless you are arrested or there is some other valid reason for not re-arming you (highly intoxicated comes to mind).

The LEO that took my weapon ended up chatting with me for a few minutes about it. He was very professional and polite but was curious about my choice of weapon, choice to carry etc. I think he was trying to build first hand knowledge of the folks he'd now be encountering who carried guns. As hinted at before, this was very soon after the CC laws went into effect so this was all new to him too.

I read a story somewhere about an off duty cop saved the day at a church because he was carrying. Truly nasty people aren't going to care where they are when they do bad things.

If I can find the story I'll post a link.

Edit:
A quick search didn't find what I was talking about but I did find this:

You never know when it'll hit the fan near you.
Maybe it never will (fingers crossed).

What good is a self defense weapon with out one in the chamber ready for the safety to be placed off. In a true self defense scenerio you may not have time to chamber a round.

If I had to use my weapon and needed to slide the action, which requires 2 hands, level out, and fire, anyone else with an already loaded gun would have had more than ample time to take me out. If your friends are carrying with an empty chamber, please tell them to never take their weapon out. It's a sure way to get killed.

On a side note, any intelligent person would not be 'showing' soeon how to use a concealed weapon. That would make it NOT concealed. By taking his weapon out, he violated the law and as a result someone got hurt. This is why we do what the law says.
I live in Texas, I actually do know alot of people with CHLs and yes I know they are loaded at all times. Maybe you misunderstood me. But if any of my friends where going to hand me their gun to "check it out" they would unload the chamber and the magazine and then hand it to me and I would be smart enough to know not to point it anywhere but down and my finger wouldn't be near the trigger.

The article wasn't really clear... Was the person with the concealed carry permit holding the gun when it went off, or was the prospective buyer??

Here is another article that explains what happened. The guy with the gun works at the sound system at the church.

That's true. Whoever had the control of the gun should have made sure of where it was being pointed and if it was load or not. Remember, every gun is loaded. That's what you should be thinking every time you handle a gun or are around a gun.

Anyone who thinks its fun to run around with loaded weapons can have all the fun with that.

I am sure guns are fun to the gun enthusiast and I RESPECT THAT.

But like I said, I'm not joining any churches.

The guy above just PROVED that statistically speaking lots of people take guns into churches.

These guys with a license to carry see it as some kind of Reward or Privledge for getting their concealed gun permit.

Just because YOU CAN carry the gun anywhere you want, does not MORALLY mean that you should.

Interestingly (hypothetically and this is not referring to the guy above at all but...) someone can be completely UNEDUCATED and also be THE LOWEST CLASS person you have ever met in your life and THAT SAME PERSON can EASILY get a concealed gun permit.

That reasoning by itself is frightening. The percentage of THOSE TYPES of people with a gun in their pocket is probably WAY higher than people want to know.

My company has a specific exception to the weapons policy that states those that have concealed licenses may carry in the building. I love my job!

you may be thinking of an incident at a mega church in Colorado where a retired police officer (female) was concealed carry at the church and put down a bad guy that had shot two in the parking of the church and was headed inside to inflict as much damage as he could on the congregation. All because the shooter was kicked out of the youth ministry or something.

I hope the ban hammer does not get me, but...

Because I am a Husband, Farther, and a human being of sound mind, I am morally bound and obligated to protect those that depend on me. A gun is nothing more than a tool of last resort to help fulfill my moral obligation. I'm not one for organized religion but I believe Jesus said to his disciples, "...if you do not have a sword, Sell your cloak and buy one." I believe Jesus did not want his disciples to be victims. So why not carry at church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or where ever one chooses to pray.

just saying.
