Are you not aware of an election coming up in a few months. Gas prices always do a roller coaster around election time. They will go waaaaaay up and then, just in time, the incumbent will announce how he has listened to us and forces OPEC to increase production. I am not blaming this administration as they ALL do this. Problem is that almost all Americans fail to see it happening and fall for it time after time.

Part of the problem is a significant portion of the price you pay for gas is in the form of federal and state taxes. Read somewhere awhile back that the federal and state government actually made more from gas sales than the gas companies made in profit during one quarter (and I'm sure it's true for other quarters as well).

Part of the problem is the ending of the corn subsidy. Since ethanol is a required substance in many areas it's increase is causing gas prices to rise also.

Where I live I always see pickup trucks and SUVs that get like 15 miles per gallon and the drivers are always flooring it, driving it like they stole it, so what is odd to me is the folks you THINK would care about gas prices apparently don't.
to offset gas prices I just keep my RPMS at 1500, not 4000. |

It's such BS too, most of our oil comes from freaking Canada. But because these prices are for some stupid reason based on "speculative buying" or whatever, prices go up when something happens in Iran even though we don't buy their damn oil in the first place.

Current average fuel price in Western Canada: $1.16/L = $4.40/US Gallon. And its cheap right now! I would quit complaining. (for those that were)

Yea, well it used to be cheap, around the four or five year ago mark. Once they got us above the $1 /L mark, its been a free for all, seeing as high as $1.50/L! (5.67/USGal)

Speculators on the other hand more or less bet on how the supply & demand curve will change in the near future. For the most part, it isn't based on actual production shortfalls or drops in demand, but rather what might happen. A classic example is hurricane season. Speculators assume that countless rigs and refineries will get shut down each time a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico, thereby causing a production shortfall which supposedly justifies a price hike. Except that typically, most facilities are bypassed completely and of the ones are in the path few are damaged enough to cause a meaningful effect on production capacity. So prices drop back down a few days later. Quote:
And you might want to check your math. Compared to the average American, Canadians pay about a third more (1.33 times as much). On the other hand, Americans pay about 70% of what we pay (0.7 times as much). If we were paying 1.7 times, the average price would be up around $1.55/L

I've been on a "business" trip for a month. Driving a crappy Ford Focus hatchback. Haven't filled up in two weeks. Is gas getting outta hand again? I usually have a 40 minute commute in my Camaro. Fill up twice a week. Gotta admit, this is nice not having to. Oh no, I'm not getting one for a DD. This thing blows as far as fun driving goes!
