USS Gabrielle Giffords

Ok, I got to vent on this one big time.

Even though I retired as a Navy Chief after 20 years in the Navy and wore my anchors with pride, honor, courage, commitment, integrity, unity, service and navigation, naming a ship after Gabrielle Giffords is absurd. There is no denying it was tragic that Congresswoman Giffords almost lost her life from an assassination attempt, but to name a ship after her is unjust. What about the other 6000+ service members that have lost there life in Iraq and Afghanistan leaving spouses and children behind without their mommy or daddy? The only thing those family's receive is a flag presented to them with the words "Sir/Ma'am, this flag is presented on behalf of a grateful nation as an expression of appreciation for the honorable and faithful service rendered by your loved one." (Wording will vary with the different branches of the service)

Sorry for the rant, but this really chaps my ass.

I also agree, but which of those 6000+ soldiers are you going to name 1 ship after?

Perhaps you never heard of DDG-109, the USS Jason Dunham? Named after a United States Marine Medal of Honor recipient from the Iraq War, Corporal Jason Dunham. Congresswoman Giffords didn't name the ship after herself! Come on, get real.

There's a new DDG class and the first one will be named after Michael Monsoor, a SEAL killed in the recent war.

Also, theres a DDG (PCU) 112, USS Michael Murphy, another SEAL killed in the recent war

But I completely agree with you on the topic. No Destroyer should be named after senators. Perhaps a Supply ship, but not a destroyer, amphib, cruiser, frigate or any ship directly involved in war. However, I will support a ship being named after Arnie, the Governator.
USS Arnold Shwarzenegger. Can you imagine? The God D@m enemy would run away after hearing his ship is coming, hahahaha

Although I apreciate her service to her District, I don't think it is appropriate to name a United States Navy ship for her. Just sayin'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't it used to be that ships could only bear someones name if they were deceased ? I agree with Navy Dood, as far as I know Gabrielle Giffords hasn't ever served in the military
