As for the social worker- I think she's extremely lucky. The way he planned things out, it's a good thing she didn't make it to the house before the kids. I think he planned to dispatch her first. The kids running to the house gave him an opportunity lock her out so he didn't have to deal with her, and she wouldn't have time to threaten his plan. Other than having to live with the memories, she got lucky.
The thing I want to know is if they suspected this guy of killing his wife- and they knew it, they just couldn't prove it to a jury-yet. Why would they think it was okay to send an unarmed woman alone into his house? It boggles the mind. I'm waiting to see if anything is made of that in the aftermath. Some people need to lose their government jobs over this one.
We discussed that on Sunday. Do they ever have off-duty cops supervise visits?? I have no idea... But maybe CPS should consider it.
They just interviewed the social worker's husband on the news. he said she's just devastated, even though she knows there was nothing she could have done to stop it. Tryng to could have cost her life.

'Course, what the hell do I know?:(
Being local here in Seattle, there were several interviews with family friends, and the guy was just creepy to begin with. I tried to find the specific articles (they are out there), but google is just spewing out links to the recent suicide...so the posts are buried at least a few pages deep.

There were implications from the family that Josh and his father collaberated in the father videotaping her secretly.

If I was on a jury, we couldn't convict even now. Though maybe the father (who is on suicide watch in prison for the above offense) knows for sure. Many think he or Josh killed her, and both of them knew what happened. That is, of course speculation....but you'd have had to hear all the interviews here back when she was killed. Family friends, etc...all implicating Josh.

Sort of like...O.J. murdered two people. No conviction, but we all know what happened.

Devil's advocate... No escuse for what he did to those boys but we will hopefully never be faced with the prospect of never being allowed to see our children or raise them. He may have been guilty of nothing more than losing his sanity from the hopeless pain of having his children yanked from his life due to other peoples misgivings (dad, wife, etc.). I could never hurt my son and wept for his, though I've never met them but could not imagine facing never seeing him again...and I'm one of the most stable level-headed people I know. Not bragging. I've done some lliving that isn't always easy and still find things to smile about every day.

You never know what you can shoulder until you do...or don't. Pray for those boys. Torch the remaining father /grandpa. He's the only one proven to be guilty and started the cycle if I understand things correctly.

For the record, again, I could never condone what this guy did so please don't take offense. You have to love your children enough to let them go if that is best but I couldn't imagine it.

As for the comment about his doing this to get away with something I disagree. He did not get away with anything. He is dead, too. He took his sons lives because he was too weak to let them go. I'm sorry to ramble but I'm on the road for work, missing my kids, and saddened at the thought of any father being capable or this. Couldn't imagine where his mind must have been.

I don't think he got away with anything, either. Word around town is that he thought if he couldn't have his kids, nobody else could, either. A judge had ordered a psycho-sexual mental health evaluation on him last week. There was an interview with a social worker on the news the other night, and he said those kind of evaluations are often lose-lose situations. If you refuse, you lose custody. If you take the evaluation, all your deep, dark, dirty secrets are out, and you lose custody. Can't blame the judge who ordered it, but the theory is that he couldn't face that evaluation...

Just sad. Nobody will likely ever know. Creepy grandpa may have done it all and the son got caught up and saw no hope. Sucks. Evil stuff, for sure.

The KSL news story from Utah and the 911 tapes:
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=1914...cid=featured-1

What an A!@hole... it just infuriates me that he could knowingly think about, plan and follow through with the methods he used to kill his kids. The 911 tapes are just sickening when you hear the social worker explaining to the dispatcher she had been locked out of the house and Josh took the kids inside...then she says she can hear one of the kids inside crying.... then the strong smell of gasoline, then she decides to go back to her car and move out of the driveway. The crying she heard was surely one of the boys watching as his dad murdered the other then it got quiet because the second was then murdered. The only thing I didn't hear in the news clips was how the coroner said that a@!hole died....I hope he poured gasoline on himself and burned to death!!! I cant believe the horrors those little boys were subject to at the hands of a person they trusted and supposedly loved them. D##N HIM!!!

GOD BLESS those two beautiful little soles and give them back their smiles and hopefully endless warm hugs from their mother.......so very sad. I hope everyone here takes a minute to give your own kids or grandkids a big hug.....I know I will.

Listening to the 911 tapes, I wondered if the dispatcher feels like crap for telling the social worker that "life threatening emergencies" take precedence over her call... The Sheriff department is literally 4 traffic lights away from there. Doubt they could have done anything, but you would think that with all the media attention this man has received over the past 2 years, as soon as she said "Josh Powell", the cops would have been on the way... Not placing blame on the dispatcher, but there are so many "what ifs" now...

Why can't Psychotic people "off themselves" and leave everyone else alone. (this is if they willingly refuse to get help or seek a treatment facility.)

It would be almost Heroic if CRAZY people would just kill themselves and leave a suicide note saying "I am doing this so I don't bring harm to others or my children. Please tell my family I love them".

The latest news is that there will be an investigation into the way the 911 dispatcher handled the call from the social worker... Should be interesting.
