My folks gave me a broken down beater POS that landed in their laps when I was 14.
They told me if I spent some of my summer job money and my free time fixing it I could sell it when I turned 16 and buy something I actually wanted. That's what I did. Dad gave instruction but almost never helped. I learned the value of a buck and the value of hard work. Not to mention the fact that I've worked on my own cars ever since saving me a pile of cash over the years. My folks were smart. Didn't cost them a dime and gave them a better son. OP: The only thing that I would do differently is start with something that was less pristine. She'll probably care for it a bit more if SHE had to pay for the paint job with her stall cleaning money. But you know your kid better than I do...

I love when people tell other people whats best for their kids
...I bought both my kids cars...you know why??? because I could, that by no means makes the kids any less appreciative of what they got......it's the way the kids were raised that determines how the kids act towards these kind of things...not whether they paid for them or not. Just sayin

I've met the 13 year old young lady being discussed here... Very nice girl, really into cars, and willing to work hard for what she gets. Good for you Tammy, but make sure to stick to the plan - don't want to spoil her! LOL!

make them get a job. Im from a place where everyone bought their kids cars, and the cars end up trashed, because they were handed it, and didnt have to work for it. And, I mean working... as in a job, where they have to be on time, clock in, work hard and clock out, even when their friends go out. That will make them appreciate a vehicle.
I started working at 15, and I ended paying for my own car, motorcycle, and most of my college myself. And, do i appreciate and not abuse my things, your dang straight. Do my friends that were handed everything? Lets just say most of them didnt even finish college. And, I understand that doesnt apply to all kids, but id say 90% of the kids I went to school with were like that. Last edited by austinjames; 02-05-2012 at 03:59 PM. |
