Here's is how I see it. If we all vote no lynch the mafia is going to end up killing someone over night and an innocent townie dies. If we vote to lynch someone, we have the possibility of lynching a mafia member or the serial killer. The probability of a townie being killed is less by placing a vote, than doing nothing at all.

But if we vote and accidentally lynch one of our fellow townies, than the mafia could kill another townie too at night. Id rather not risk getting two innocent ppl killed for lack of evidence!
