You have tunnel vision Blue Maro Demon. You're only looking at the last couple years, look at the big picture. The sales lead Camaro has now isn't that large, and the Mustang is very profitable at the current numbers anyway. When was the last time Camaros outsold Mustangs in the last 20 years? When was the last time a Camaro was lighter than a Mustang? And when talking about performance, in the last 20 years, besides the late 90's early 2000's, about 5 years, the Mustang has lead in performance model to model, or outright with models (cobra, gt500) that the Camaro had no answer for. The Camaros Achilles heel has always been the Corvette; that's the real advantage Ford has with the Mustang. And as far as looks, Camaro has a lot more to lose in the next gen. It's the only real advantage it has right now, and some would argue that point.

So please explain why you would think the Mustang is doomed again, because I just don't see it.

Mustang is not going anywhere. It has never been out of production like the camaro was.The mustang is also less expensive(here in Canada at least)
The Camaro is not outselling the mustangs by leaps and bounds.
The only reason I have a camaro is because GM is making them again. If the 5th gens were not on the market , I would be driving a mustang.
I am more of a GM guy than a Ford guy as I had an '85 Z28 in my youth and my 5th gen is my midlife crisis.
IMO,GM has missed 8 years of sales to the mustangs when the camaros went out of production.
Things will balance out between the sales of the 2 iconic muscle cars.
What I do enjoy is the fact that there is competition between the manufacturers to produce better cars so that we all win in the pony wars regardless if your a chevy guy or ford guy.

this.

also, how is ford doomed when theyre right behind the camaro in sales and are most likely making more profit in the segment??

the next mustang and camaro will most likely be right around 3500lbs.

From a financial standpoint Ford is the most comfortable American auto manufacturer by far. Look at the cash Ford has and the profits it's posting. They are in no way anywhere near being in trouble or, "done for." Mustang sales slipped, but they are also on a platform that sold many thousands for 4-5 years before the Camaro even came back. Considering the next mustang will be on a new platform, will have IRS, a different design, likely a direct injection 5.0 with other drivetrain options to compete with the Camaro, you can't really make any accurate assumptions about what the car will do performance wise or how it will appeal to the market. If there is one thing Ford knows how to do well, it's sell mustang. A few years of less than stellar sales aren't going to make Ford pull the plug on a car they are probably still profiting heartily on. The Mustang has been sold non-stop for nearly 50 years with many years of worse sales than they're seeing now. . . Ford is not even close to dropping the Mustang.

Or maybe it's because there are more camaro fans out there. Doesn't mean it is because of looks. How long was the camaro gone? Of course people want to get a new one. Especially if they are hard core fans of it. The first few years chevy will have great sales numbers. Watch for those numbers to taper off.

Don't fall into the trap of comparing a potential 6th gen Camaro with the current Mustang, because the next Camaro will not compete with the current Mustang. Many of you compared the ZL1 to the old GT500 in the same way...right up until the 650hp GT500 crashed the ZL1's launch party and caught GM with its pants down.

A new Mustang will be launched before the 6th gen Camaro is launched, and it will definitely be upping the ante. The coyote engine will likely get direct injection, they will be going to IRS, and my money says that like the current cars, the next Mustang will continue to be lighter, handle better, and cost less than the next Camaro.

I know I might be biased because I own one of these doomed vehicles, but I am pretty sure the OP is off his rocker.

I think the Op is dreaming up a best case scenario for the Camaro. Unfortunately, that will never happen. Chevy have more to lose in the next gen than Ford.

Ford has a more secure financial state than GM. Everyone knows that so how again is Ford doomed? Look at the total number of sales when comparing sales vs sales. For 7+ years, the Camaro didn't even exist. If you want to count from day 1, the Mustang has sold more than the Camaro. I can appreciate your loyalty to GM but unless GM is giving you free stocks or free car every year, your loyalty is a waste.

They can either get their design team to actually build a good looking car from a design standpoint with their new 6th Gen Mustang or they are doomed. As we all know the performance of a vehicle is great and all but it doesnt translate as well as a cars design when it comes to actual sales and getting people to part with their money in their wallet. The 4th Gen Camaro and previous Camaros taught us that lesson the Mustang sold because of its design but yet more times than not it got spanked by the Camaro performance wise up until the current gen heavy Camaro.

But Ford wont have ANY advantages this next round of Pony/Muscle car sales wars. The performance differences between the two cars will be closer than ever more than likely this next generation with Ford more than likely not having its significant weight advantage to make it a bit faster like it currently has. More than likely both cars will weigh as close to identical in a looong time with the 6th Gen Camaro being on the alpha platform plus things recently in the news about GM buying more in the way of carbon fiber for other vehicles. And lets face it neither of these cars will probably go down in weight to 2,900lbs we are probably talking lower 3,400 to 3,200 weights of the cars. Plus the Gen 5 V8 from next years C7 Corvette unveil will likely be one of the many engines for the 6th gen Camaro with a rumored 440 to 470hp rating from a lighter 5.5 liter & lets not forget the likely mpg fightings from a Mustang SHO & Camaro turbo 4-cylinder. Basically Camaro has Ford backed into a corner either build an incredibly designed Mustang that looks better than Chevrolets 6th Gen Camaro or they are done for maybe forever from a sales standpoint & if the new Lincoln MKZ are ANY indication Ford has a long way to go when it comes to design. Yeah the new Fusion looks alright but we will see. Also another advantage Chevrolet will have is the Mustang will come out first a year in advance it could give Chevrolet an opportunity to make the Camaro lighter than the Mustang from the get go. Add in the fact that EVERY kid off the block thinks the Camaro is the coolest car on the road thanks to the Transformers movies they will more than likely signal any new Camaro in that way now which translates to future Camaro sales. Ford has an uphill battle now and its going to be interesting to see the effect the 6th gen Camaro has on the market when it is released.
Please dont freak out when I say this. I realize this is a camaro website and let me state that I love all 3 American muscle cars.

But dude, seriously? Mustang is no where near being in trouble. Your argument is very opinionated quite frankly.

My final point, you try to say Mustang in in trouble but Mustang has never been out of production, unlike camaro. Yanno why? Cuz Ford has never screwed up like GM did.

I like the looks of the current mustang just as much as the camaro and the GT500 is far better looking. So for me it isn't about looks. The camaro is the latest fad. Only time will tell if it ends up being more then that. It's a new car completing against a 2005 design. If they come out with a totally new mustang ,I believe the sales numbers will be much closer.
Both are great cars. I just thing the camaro has a sales edge because the new hasn't worn off yet. I do believe though that the ZL1 is a game changer ,and even though the GT500 will have more power it will fall behind when it comes to overall performace. Either way these are fun times in the hot rod world.
