I drove across Nevada last summer. Nevada NEEDS to have no speed limits.

Yup.................I can remember driving as fast as I wanted to on our NV highways back in the late 60's and early 70's. Cruising at 80 - 90 MPH in my GTO was pure bliss! If you venture far enough into the NV/CA deserts not far from here there are still many stretches of semi-deserted highway that if you maintain a watchful eye, you can still let 'er all hang out!

Too many people from too many places with different driving habits for this to work here. Face it, you can't fix stupid. But you can try like hell!

That being said, I would love to have a section of major freeway (2 lanes each way) where you could pay a toll with a "Certified Car" after you take a "Special" course that only has a few access and exit points along a several hundred mile stretch that is blocked in like the carpool lane on I-5 where stupid couldn't screw it up as easily. ahhhhhh to dream.
The is the best and most realistic proposal yet. I still don't see it happening though.

An autobahn would be great but I would be happy if people would just be a little more aware of their bad driving habbits on the roads we have. There is a 4 lane highway that runs the length of southern Ohio to 275, Cincinnati's loop. Now the speed limit is 60 and I would love to be able to actually go 60 without some jackass going 48 mph in the slow lane, and another dick head going 50 mph in the "passing" lane.

I'd pay a fee (toll) to drive on it. There would be enough right lanes for the morons.

Sadly Americans can't handle no speed limits. Case in point Montana... Had no speed limit on its highways. People started coming over to top end their cars and what not and kept killing themselves... Now Montana has a speed limit on highways.

there are parts of the autobahn that have speed limits during certain parts of the day... even that would be an ok idea... during normal traffic times the freeway is limited but between 10pm and 5am no speed limit... hey i can dream right...

Smart highways for stupid drivers is what we need... collision avoidance in cars will be mandated in our life-time most likely, and the ability to join in to hide speed convoys for longer trips.

Would you be willing to lock-into the high speed convoy lane for the chance to go 125 mph with little or no driver input?

I've seen a History Channel documentary about Autobahns, and unfortunately, they require a LOT of cooperation with other drivers to work - something that many Americans seem to lack the ability to do.

I do think, however, that there are plenty of stretches of highway that require no speed limit. I can think of a few on I-71 right off the bat that are completely straight and have no exits that shouldn't have a speed limit.

All rise, Court is now in Session..

Ok, I've heard a dozen times now: "Have a special liscence." So what? Little granny, who is lost, and confused, is still going to steer her car onto the onramp, and go 40 on an unlimited speed road.. the whole time muttering to herself, and her freaking cat "Where are the exits? Why can't I get off this crazy road?" While shaking her fist out the window, and screaming "You drivers are all crazy!!"

So, whats the fix? I'm in the military.. our ID cards now have microchips in them, they use for card readers that give you access to the computer system. Whats my point? Training.

- Make it mandatory to take a driving class exclusively for unlimited speed roads.
- Make a special category of insurance you must carry on your vehicle, again.. exclusively for unlimited speed roads.

Once you PASS the class, and can prove you have the required insurance, you get issued a SEPERATE drivers liscence.. one with a microchip in it. Then.. you drive to the unlimited superhighway we all dream about.
when you get there.. guess what? The road is BLOCKED. Toll-Booth style. So little dirty-johnny cant just drive onto the road and claim "Oops, I didnt know i needed a special liscence."

You take your "Unlimited Drivers Liscence", stick it into a card reader in the toll booth unit, it checks for outstanding warrants, valid insurance.. whatever. It's a computer, you can program it however you see fit. After the "System" varifies you are trained, and authorized to be on the road, guess what.. The crossbar lifts.. and you are free to access the "American Dream Highway."

States could use it as a revenue provider. Make a toll booth every time the highway crosses a state line. Pay the toll to continue, or take the off ramp. And guess what.. that "Outstanding warrants" comment i made.. That gets scanned every time you pay the toll, so if there is a particular state that is unfriendly with your "Civilian" status.. the Highway Department can come get you.

Make the road 3 lanes: Right lane, 70 MPH and under (for those who want to make good time on a highway, but arent into the whole "Supercar" thing.. The middle lane would be 70-100 MPH, and the Left lane, oh baby... is the 100+ lane. Flash the lights, honk the horn, hit the "Go-Baby-Go" button.. and never look back.

Proud to be an American. F%$# Yeah!!

As long as a-holes in this country sit in the left lane, when not passing and don't move out of the way of faster moving vehicles it will never happen.
