Alabama-LSU produces lowest TV rating for national championship in BCS era
Jon Solomon -- The Birmingham News

NEW ORLEANS -- Alabama loved a rematch. Not so much of the rest of the country.
It turns out most television viewers didn't want to see Alabama-LSU again, at least not an uncompetitive rematch.
Overnight ratings for Alabama's 21-0 victory over LSU were the lowest for a national championship in the 14-year history of the BCS. The All-SEC affair, the first championship pairing teams from the same conference, drew a 13.8 overnight rating on ESPN. The previous record low was a 14.3 for Miami-Nebraska at the 2002 Rose Bowl.
To put last night's rating in perspective, Alabama-LSU on Nov. 5 drew an 11.5 on CBS. Last night's game was down 14 percent from Auburn's three-point victory over Oregon last year. It was down 24 percent from Alabama's last national championship when the Crimson Tide defeated Texas in 2010.

Alabama-LSU capped a disappointing ratings year for the BCS on ESPN. Even before Monday night, the BCS' 7.3 average rating was down 10 percent from the 2010 season and 21 percent from 2009, when the games aired on Fox.
The Rose, Orange, Sugar and BCS Championship all took ratings hits this season. West Virginia's 70-33 rout of Clemson at the Orange Bowl drew just a 4.5 rating, making it the lowest-rated game in BCS history.
Interestingly, the three lowest overnight ratings for the BCS Championship Game occurred in a year when there was some controversy over the participating teams. The previous low (14.3), in 2002, featured Nebraska, which didn't win its conference. LSU's win over Oklahoma in 2004 featured a Sooners team that didn't win its conference.
Last night, Alabama became the first school since Minnesota in 1936 to win a national title without winning its conference. Alabama fans are understandably rejoicing.
Much of the rest of the country apparently tuned out.
The Orange, Rose, Sugar and BCS Championship all took Ratings hits this season. The only BCS Bowl that did not take a hit was the Fiesta Bowl which drew in 22.6% of US Tv Audiences.

All we can ever say what if..... But what if

No one can say that bama could beat a a certain other school and the same goes really for that other school who ever it may be.

You can predict it would be a better game but no one knows.

The us audience said bama doesn't belong so much that defense had something to prove. " the MVP said it after the game ". Good ol locker room material.

Where in 09 the bama offense won the game and the defense did what it needed to do.

This year the defense rocked the field while the offense got the position on the field to get fg's and a td

Scoreboard

Congrats

Just because you say so....does not make it true!! BCS needs to change the program!!, all that was proved last night was that the Tide is the BCS Defensive Champs.

You can woulda, shoulda, coulda all day long but the fact remains is that Alabama is the 2011 and 2009 BCS National Champions......

In 2009 all I heard was Colt McCoy.........This year I hear something else.......No one ever knows about the future what we do know is what did happen last night and Alabama spanked LSU......the way they played last night they would have spanked any team in the USA...Unfortunately we do not have a playoff system and OBTW that the SEC wanted years ago but was voted down by the Pac 10 and Big 10 and the Big East wanted no part of the playoff....now all of a sudden it's all about the playoff.

While I agree I would have like to have seen a playoff it really doesn't matter to me......you make the system and Alabama will be there.

Right now we have the top program in college football, getting top recruits and have a great coaching staff.

I have said this before and will say it again...as long as an SEC is in the mix they will be tough to defeat because of the defenses........Most other conferences do not play the type of football we do in the SEC...power running game, great defenses and a QB who can make a few plays. Power and Speed do not have slumps...QB's do.

Texas is going back to this formula...great defense, power running game and a QB who can make a few plays.

I will say this about the SEC....everytime and SEC team has played a high powered offense from another conference the SEC teams have won.....UNTIL a school beats an SEC team with a pass happy offense then it is a moot point.

I will say this though college football goes in cycles. The SEC is havig a good run but it will end, just like USC's run ended, Miami's run ended....they all end...............SO I am enjoying it will we are on top.

Congrats to my beloved CRIMSON TIDE.......Ramma Jamma.........
Maybe not but it would have been a better showing from OSU. More competetive game and definitely more offense.

Congrats to the Tide.

You are correct PQ but as people in Alabama said in 2004 when Auburn was left out....USC would have not put 55 on them.

NO doubt. BUT, like last night, nobody in the country would have beat USC that night. Only might have made it a better game.

This year LSU played the OU of that year. Cept LSU was undefeated due to a feild goal kicker back in November.

I know alot of people are dragging at work today....LOL

The only way they are ever going to get some half order for people to agree is to add a plus one game...........then they will complain about who is number 5 like they do in the NCAA March Madness.

I think USC will be good, Oregon, Arkansas and maybe Alabama next year...OU and Texas will improve OSU might have some struggles but it should be interesting.

I think Alabama will lose 2 or 3 next year just because of the year after effect and A LOT of new faces on the defense
.

Landry is coming back, Barkley's back Oregon is not really losing anyone...Who knows WV may turn the BIG 12 for a loop.

I will say this though...I was kinda worried about the Big 12 officials but they did a great job...missed a few horse collar tackles but all in all they let'em play.

Like Jekyll-N-Hyde posted the game was the lowest rated game in BCS Chapionship game history. All of the BCS games are down ratings wise. I'd love to see the ratings drop further and further and further until they start actually losing money. FORCE a more interesting bowl season.

The BCS was "Supposed" to take the ole Homeboy network out of picking Champions as they did in the old days....Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes etc... got votes because of who they were.......

But the newer system didn't take into account scholarship reductions down to 85, conferences limiting yearly scholarships and in todays society there are so many talented kids who want to play instead of going to a school for a coach.

I heard a proposal yesterday that I liked....top 6 teams
1 & 2 have a bye

3 plays 6
4 plays 5

Congrats to Bama on a dominating win. LSU looked like they didn't even want to be there and Bama was fully prepared. If we had a playoff how great would a Bama/OkSt finale be??

I would also like to apologize in advance to Bama for the big fat loss they'll be taking at the beginning of next season!

Well that will be an interesting game especially since we will probably lose 7 defensive starters.......Ole Shoelace aint that big, but fast....don't know what he is gonna think when he takes some big hits.

One thing is for sure it should be a good game but I don't think Michigan can handle the heat that Alabama will bring.

Roll Tide Ya'll
