I wonder what that will do for the prices as well. If the Camaro is the only car under that platform, then there won't be as large of a supply of parts if they were mass producing them for several cars based on the Zeta platform.
Is this history repeating itself? Just when we are about to get some huge expansions in the modern muscle car (Challenger, Camaro, GTO, Mustangs) we are also getting hit by some stringent environmental regualations again. Will the 2010s be like the 1970s? |

Sure, with one exception, the Muscle car era hasn't even started yet! God, this depresses me...

The Monte (and it's platform mates...the Impala, the Grand Prix, the Bonneville, and don't be surprised if there are more, esp. in other world markets) has been a front driver for some time now....in fact, since it made it's "comeback". It's predecessor (here in the US anyway), the Lumina was FWD too.

The monte (and co) haven't been rear drive for about 20 years

Well that settles it. I'll just have to wait a while to study after getting a decent job. Because I WANT a RWD muscle car and with this there's a risk I might not get it new if I wait.

Well first off, studying will cost about half of what a Camaro will cost, just studying costs for two years, and to save that up will take at least two years so that's about four years right there. Then the business I want to get into isn't always the most financially secure (the film business) so it might take a while for me to be able to afford the Camaro. Say about two years there also at least. That's six years from now and that's definetly pushing it for this styling of the Camaro even if it becomes a success.
Damn I'd just like to win like 500k or something and I wouldn't have to put one choice on hold... -.- |

I really liked the 2006-2007 Monte Carlo model, and the fact that it has a nice V8 in it impresses me too, but jesus - FWD? It just changes my whole perception. I dunno, maybe I'm too picky? How does everyone else feel?

I just find it amazing that they shoved a small block in sideways. I hate the NASCAR styling of the last monte carlos, the grand prix look far nicer, and to a lesser extent so does the Impala (though I'm not sure why on that). I don't know much about the last montes, other than they were a 2 door, front drive, with a v8 option

Yeah, V8 powered FWD just always seemed weird to me. I mean, it was weird ever since they tried it with the Toronado.
So people though the Monte was RWD this whole time? Heck if it was, I would have a bought a used V8 powered one a long time ago. |

To comment on the original post, I was at a Jaguar dealership yesterday talking to a friend of mine who works there and he explained the whole government regulations thing to me. According to him the regulations say the vehicle that a manufacturer sells the most of must get over 30mpg by 2008, this year, and they also did some tweaking as to how the actual measurement of gas milage is figured out to make it more accurate. So basically, all a manufacturer has to do is make sure the vehicle it sells the most of gets 30mpg or more. So for Ford, all they would do is flood the market with Focuses to meet the regulation, and then the Mustang would be free to do as it pleases. I'm not sure how future regulations are going to affect everything, I'll ask him about that next time I see him, but for right now it seems the Camaro and other RWD cars should be safe with the correct marketing by a manufacturer.
