They weren't calling SRT a model though. They said that the Viper would be an SRT model, meaning that SRT is the make, Viper is the model.

It would count towards the CAFE score of Chrysler Group LLC, which includes Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and SRT. I'm not sure if Fiat is specifically included there, or if Fiat lumped in with Ferrari and Maserati under Fiat S.p.A. (which might also be bundled together with the Chrysler Group as far as CAFE goes)

Dodge would have the Dart, Avenger, Charger, Challenger, Durango, Caravan, and Journey.

Exactly. From their article:

Quote:
Chrysler revealed today the next-gen 2013 Viper will be badged and sold as an SRT model, and not as a Dodge.
Quote:
SRT spokesman Dan Reid confirmed to us that the 2013 Viper will, in fact, be branded and sold as a SRT model, making it the first Viper to shun the Dodge badge.
Am I wrong in thinking that they should have put "make" or "brand" instead of the bolded words?

Dodge, Jeep, Chevrolet, GMC and Ford are all "makes" of vehicles. After reading this article, I am assuming they are simply creating a separate "make" to market the Viper under.

I'm just curious why they would use the word "model" to describe a separate car brand.

Side note: I always thought SRT was considered a trim level...

They're not talking about SRT as a model though. They're talking about a model (the Viper) as being part of the SRT brand.

To say that "Viper is an SRT make" would mean that Viper is a level above SRT, which it isn't. Its easier to understand (at least for me) if you replace 'make' with 'brand'. So, lets try it that way: "Viper is an SRT brand". That doesn't make sense. SRT is a Chrysler Group brand. Viper is an SRT model. But Viper is not an SRT brand.

And yes, SRT used to be a trim level/performance division. Making it its own brand came from the same great minds that felt that Ram needed to be spun off from Dodge.

so what happens to the charger srt, challenger srt, 300 srt, and grand cherokee srt? Do they stay in dodge, chrysler, and jeep? Or do they become the SRT charger, SRT challenger, SRT 300, and SRT grand cherokee?

Wasn't that batmobile posted above actually a corvette with a custom body kit? I do think the viper is a bad ass car, and I see where they weree going with the above colors, kind of rattlesnake or other pit viper the color seems to resemble. Still, if I were buying a viper, the dealer would have to find me another color. Of course I too would take it for free and drive it as is

I'm glad to see Viper being put back into production. I got a Motor Trend Magazine for it's "Final Edition" or whatever and was sad to see it go.
