Question NTSB Pushes For Ban of Cell Phone Usage While Driving

Including hands-free, unless the device was one installed by the manufacturer (for example, OnStar's phone service).

http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/13/us/nts...html?hpt=hp_t1

Thoughts?

If people would pay as much attention to the traffic as they do their conversations then traffic accidents could be reduced considerably. I for one can't stand to see someone yapping away while driving. Most people seem oblivious to what's going on around them, and I couldn't count how many times I've been cut off in traffic by someone talking/texting and not paying attention.

I am surprised they are including hands-free in their recommendation, though...

Just read this a couple mins ago in the elevator. If they are tryingto even ban hands-free calling; that wont really stop anyone from talking. So many cars have bluetooth calling built into the car from the factory already.

Are they also going to ban us messing with the radio and AC system? It's even been proven that if you are talking to someone or have kids to worry about in the back seat that it can distract the driver and cause a crash. There's a bunch of things that distract a driver besides texting and talking on a cell. Let's just see how strict the rules get..........

I'm not sure about the "only OEM installed handsfree allowed" clause, but I definately support the push.

If you have handsfree that allows you to place and receive phone calls without removing your hands from the wheel, than it shouldn't matter if its OEM or aftermarket.

I just wonder how strictly such a law would be enforced.

It doesn't matter if you're holding a phone up to your ear or using handsfree, people still get distracted. Texting however is a huge no no, I've been guilty of doing it a couple times but I try to keep it to red lights and as short as possible.

Which is why I don't answer my phone when driving. I'll pull into a parking lot to make a call or see what someone wants, but won't talk while driving. I think I'm one of the 1% when it comes to that.

Problem is it takes people to long to learn how to still drive and talk.

Like eating fast food and driving.

Nearly everyone by now can do that just fine, but yea Im sick of little old ladies trying to text message while they play the indecision game on if they want to unblock the intersection or not. Was bad enough when they were paying full attention and still did that game.

Well im half way out in everyones way but should I go or not?

Yeah, think about it.... I know I have. When you are talking to someone on a cell phone while driving, after you hang up think about the last few minutes driving during your conversation. Do you remember anything? Landmarks, etc?

I try to be good about it, a lot of times I just won't answer. There are times when I do, but I make sure to use the bluetooth in my Camaro.

This. Doesn't matter if you were on hands free, or using the cell phone itself.

Good

In the news today, I thought I heard them say that a texter/driver caused a 50 car pile up somewhere. If you've ever followed or drove beside a person while they're texting, you would have to support this kind of a law...I certainly do.

Yep. It bothers me sometimes how I can't remember the scenery or cars I passed by, and I always notice other cars when I'm not on my cell.

I've seen so many cars that veer into another lane (almost side swiping another car) and when u drive by 99% of the time they are on their cell phone.
