I can tell you that I never had a mullet, never lived in a trailer park, never wore a wife-beater and never did meth or any drug for that matter and I've owned and enjoyed 4 third gens. My car is 22 years old and is holding up just fine, so the comments about the care of the cars is off base. The entire Camaro community has this image and a magazine like C&D doesn't need to support that image while many owners are trying to change it. The 3rd gen Camaro was "THE" car to have in the 80's. It was sought after and coveted by everyone, so why the bad publicity?

I have to agree with you here. I don't really care what they write, but all the time you see these articles bashing older American cars, where are all these great Japanese/european cars from the 80's? More american cars are kept on the road, restored, etc., because they are a better foundation-from most any era. Nobody bothers to keep those "superior" imports on the road because nobody wants one. Most cars from that era are disposable due to technology not being ready to meet all the regulations, but you still see Camaros, Mustangs, etc. So why all the disrespect? I don't get it. It seems like a cheap shot at people that can't afford to get a new BMW every 3 years.

As for Car & driver, I have never seen more bias in any auto mag than there. They always sound disappointed when they have to give a good review of an American car. No need to boycott-I never read that garbage anyway.

C&D many times has opinions I don't agree with, as well Brock Yates used to throw some political BS in there occasionally (otherwise his articles were great), but in the end you will never find a perfect car magazine. Someone will ALWAYS have an opinion you don't like, and this is America where its ok for them to have it. I HATE magazines that everythingis all fluffy and happy and nothing critical.

In the past 19 years I have subscribed to every car magazine and the ONLY subscription that has survived is C&D. In the end they always have comprehensive looks, they are always funny, and they always are willing to tell it like it is, in their opinion. Whether I agree or not is a different story, but thats the beauty of free will, you don't have to agree.

I'm a proud owner of a 91 Z28 don't have a mullet and wear a wife beater, as an undershirt (as it should be). I don't agree with this article at all, but when I got my third gen I knew that this stereotype followed these cars. I play along with the comments about the 80's hair bands, which I just happen to like, and the whole mullet thing. I don't think it's right for the writer to voice his opinions through C&D like that. I'd just write a letter EDUCATING them that we don't live in the 80's anymore.

I never said that they have to agree with my opinions, but the stereotypical comments from a national magazine should not be made towards American cars that are so popular. They can state the car is slow in comparison to today's models, which it is. They can say they don't like the cars at all, which again is fine and part of journalism. They can write up their opinions of road tests and negative aspects of the car if they want. What they don't need to do is stereotype the entire ownership in such negative fashions as to say that we are wife beaters, trailer trash and drug addicts! That is alienating an entire group of people and making general stereotypes that are unnecessary.

FWIW, I have seen the famed mullet and wife beater tshirt in just about every car model during the 80s.

Lighten up. No matter how hard you try, you can kick and scream and boycott every magazine made but you’re not going to get rid of this stereotype. So do what I do and have a chuckle at the stupid (and sometimes very funny) comments and get onto enjoying the Camaro. Remember this is America and you're allowed to say or write anything you want, not just certain things that make everyone happy. So unless you're going to buy a different car that has a "clean" reputation, you are going to have to learn to let things like this not get to you. This stereotype is here to stay.

I had an 84 Z-28 and a mullet. I thought I had the world by the balls. Now I sell cars lost my hair and an LS Cobalt has more HP then my Camaro did. The guy reminded me of the days when I did not have a worry in the world.

Most sterotypes have some basis in reality. They no longer apply as you don't see many people with Mullets anymore or chicks with Big Hair.

Agreed. C&D is the best magazine out there IMO. I don't always agree with them though.

How can you boycott a magazine no one reads?

The days of print are over. What's said on webforums like Camaro5 and ThirdGen, or on auto blogs like TTAC, SpeedSportLife or Jalopnik matters a whole lot more than what the no-talent, I-can't-drive-to-save-my-ass print hacks write.

I've met a lot of the writers in the biz and been on track with a few; the guys from the blogs are smarter, more talented drivers, and are held accountable by their comments section. The print guys are mostly just arrogant, and for little reason.
