GM / Ford Rivalry

Filed under: Etc., Chrysler, Ford, GM

Thanks to the humbling experience of the automotive bailout, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have projected an air of amiable competitiveness over the past few years. That era may be coming to a close, however.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford and GM may be stoking one of the automotive industry's greatest rivalries once again. Executives within both companies have taken pot shots at their competitors over the past few months with GM CEO Dan Akerson insinuating that Lincoln, Ford's luxury arm, wasn't long for this world. Jim Farley, the head of marketing for Ford, meanwhile, let loose a torrent of vitriol toward GM in the book Once Upon A Car by Bill Vlasic, saying he hated GM and all that the company stands for.

These pot shots may be indicative of growing weariness by both automakers. GM has carved out larger profits and greater market share than Ford over the past few months, and The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford now considers GM it's largest threat. Previously, Ford has eyed Toyota as its largest competitor.Ford and General Motors rivalry gets sharper originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Nov 2011 11:28:00 EST. Frazier vs Ali
Yankees - Red Sox
Cardinals - Cubs
Bears - Packers
Ford - Chevy - Chrysler

You name the rivalry........... It's part of the Human Competitive Spirit..... quite frankly, I am surprised much of the recent revelations took so long to become public in today's age of technology. Hell, we (Car Folks) knew these rivalries have been going on for many decades.

That's why we have the Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger as our competitive focus..... Pick a model, each brand is in their at some level.

If I have it my way, my wife's next car will be a Ford... Can't we all just get along? They both have good models and bad models.

Rivalry and competition leads to better cars being built by both manufacturers...this can only be a good thing! I'm not a bias buyer either, whoever makes the best car for the money (style, quality, power, reliability) gets my check! It's been GM 99% of the time though...

Better it's a domestic rivalry than with an import like Honda or Toyota.

Cue , the sycophants to start the "Camaro is built in Canada" tirades.

Anyone wanna start the v-6 vs v-8 fire?

How about weight, yeah that's it the weight remarks......

Sorry, I need to go get some rest. I guess I think the Fanboy stuff is silly. As far as I am concerned, if its a good car, its on my shopping list.

Good competition, breeds better cars.

Have at it GM, Ford, Chrysler and the rest. Us consumers end up the winners.

I agree. This is why I will be trading in my '06 Mustang GT for the Camaro SS in January.

My dad used to work at Ford's Ranger assembly plant in the twin cities. I had lunch with him on Saturday and his comment was something along the lines of "It's no Ford, but at least you bought American."
