Question Brakes on my sisters car

So my sister has an 01 mercury Sable that has been jerking/lurching when she hits the brakes. It only is noticable over 30 MPH. I changed out her brake pads (front disc brakes) a couple months ago. Her rears are drums and I have no idea how to work on drums, my SS has 4 wheel discs so i'm kinda SOL on having experience with em.

It's a issue for her since she has to drive 500 miles to get home, and with montana winters we don't want her to be in any danger on the icy roads. Ideas are welcomed, she just can't afford to get it taken in for a proper inspection.

Thanks everyone, and happy holidays!

Are you talking about steering wheel vibration when braking from speed?

no, the whole car vibrates, almost feels like ABS is kicking in.

I would love to help her out, but I'm 18 and can barely afford my insurance, gas, and other expenses like getting my Camaro fixed, I wish I could help her out

does the brake pedal shudder when slowing down? could be warped rotors. di dyou look at them when you changed the pads?

It could be the ABS kicking in, Taurus(sable) axleshafts have the reluctor ring for the ABS on the outer joint. Corrosion builds up under the ring causing it to crack. The wider gap in the ring is picked up as a speed differential and the ABS kicks in.

Question

the one thing I never understood about the last gen Taurus sedans from the late 90s to early to mid 2000s was the sedans had disc/drum but the wagons had disc/disc. it was not till the Five Hundred/Taurus and the later Taurus that is out now that they had discs front back regardless of trim level.

All 96-99s actually had 4-wheel discs. They went back to drums in 2000 when they decided to turn it into a rental car.

And to the OP, whole car shuddering sounds like (badly) warped rotors. I've never experienced a whole car shaking due to ABS.

I'm getting her some front rotors as an early Christmas present when I get new rotors for myself. Mine are warped slightly, and from the way she described it I had always guessed that it was her rotors since it was similar to how mine feel. My dad's paying for her to get it taken in and checked out, and we are doing the work on it next time she's up here.
