passports are $90. EDIT... Ok up to $110 but not $550. I got mine years ago.

It's a federal thing so they shouldn't vary state to state.

NOW....everyone needs one to travel abroad. No matter what. I've had a passport since I'm 19 yrs. old.

To be honest all I hear is the stories people tell me down here about passports. Most people here go to Mexico....I have no interest since New Mexico is fun and foreign as is.
