It's a colored picture of her. It's as if the photo that you stare at is an undeveloped film, and when you take your focus away and blink at any wall, it becomes developed.

If anyone knows the physiological reasoning behind why this works, please share

don't know the exact specifics but basically the image in the OP is a negative (all the colors are inversed). It has to do with the cones (color images) and rods (black/white images) and quickly inversing the image. *I think*

Funny, because I put it into photoshop, inverted it, and then did the same thing. When you stare at the wall, it is instead the picture you posted. Freakin' weird.
