Whichever way you go, make sure you understand the FX/DX lens/sensor stuff. This applies to Canon also. It has to do with the size of the sensor compared to the old 35MM format.

For example my 60mm lens on my T3i is really a 90mm, but when put on a Canon 7D it's 60mm. It has to do with the size of the sensor and the distance from the face of the camera to the sensor.

Edit: I might add that the lens actually will not go on the 7D, but would be 90mm. Canon has EF and EF-S lenses for the two SLR series..and I'm pretty sure Nikon is the same. In the Canon case "S" is for short back focus to do with the sensor size

Don't let this fool you. Check to see what the body is made out of. The added weight could mean a more durable and tougher body.

Also, if you're new to photography and aren't exactly sure what you're getting into... I'd stick with a point and shoot. Save some $$ to upgrade later. There are plenty of P&S that allow very similar editing and manual controls that the larger DSLRs do. Get familiar with photography basics and the type of shooting that you do. Part of the reason I chose mine was because it performed so well in low-light conditions - low light photos being some of my favorite to take. It also has a built in leveler in an attempt to straighten out some of my landscapes hahaha.

The 7D is a 1.6 crop and will accept EF and EF-S lenses.

I haven't had the chance to play with the T3i at night.
But I took these with the T1i. Keep in mind they were resized for facebook so quality isn't good and it's a little hazy. The original were much clearer.

Maybe you were thinking of the 5D. That's a full frame, as is the 1Ds and the brand new 1D X.

Maybe this will help... four pics, four different cameras. One Kodak 6.1MP from 2005, the others are all Nikons (Coolpix P3 -8.1MP P&S, D80 -10.2MP DSLR and D300s -12.3MP).

I won't tell you which is which until later.

But it's a good bit of comparison to see just how noticeable the MP difference really is. The Kodak will stand out, it was a cheap $250 camera, my first digital. It looks a bit... harsher. But the difference between the Nikons are negligible. Each photo is in its native resolution (I just cut an 800x800 chunk out of the photo), not resized smaller or larger.

Everyone here has basically said both are great....just a matter of preference. And quite frankly, I don't know that much about cameras in general except point and shoot hoping that it will not be blurry.

We went to Best Buy yesterday and literally spent two hours holding and playing with the different cameras. They were really nice. One thing I noticed about the Nikon was that it was heavier. I think it was the D1000 that I was messing with...about 750 for the camera. I'll have to look into the D90? I think that's what you guys mentioned.

But, they both worked really well.
I have the D90 - check out the thread I posted with pics from Antarctica a while back. All were taken with everything on automatic. Since there are a lot of white on white scenes and difficult lighting in Antarctica, I could have made some of the shots better by NOT using it on all the auto settings (but I got the camera only a few weeks before the trip and didn't know how to fully use it yet!) - but you can get an idea of how the D90 does in point and shoot mode... http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...ght=antarctica
