Pastrami is similar, but different than corned beef. Corned beef is beef brisket cured as pork bacon, then usually boiled. Pastrami is cured in a similar way, but usually with more pepper, and than traditionally smoked.

More random info: Corned beef actually started in NY city. The olde timey Irish immigrants wanted their traditional meal of boiled bacon to celebrate St Patty's day, however most of the delis of the time were Jewish-run. No pork products for them, so they prepared beef in the same way. You're welcome.
