I am sad, I was at the Chicago Autoshow the first year the concept came out and still have my red viper car model in it's box to this day.

I remember sitting in it and just feeling like I was a God of power. Never could afford one but always loved looking at them.

Until the Concept Camaro, there had been no other car I would dream about if I won the lotto. Gratefully, I will afford my Camaro but I thank the Viper for the thrills it gave me when a black one flew by me on the expressway about 13 years ago... never forgot the chills I got.

Here's to you Dodge Viper....

Dodge Viper, R.I.P....??? Noooooo

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/08/h...led-the-viper/

Quote:
According to Jalopnik, yes. We reported yesterday that as a part of Project Genesis, Chrysler was planning to cut more models in addition to the PT Cruiser Convertible, Pacifica, Crossfire and Magnum. Jalopnik is reporting that, according to several of its sources, the decision has already been made that the Dodge Viper SRT10 will be cancelled, as well. The decision was reportedly made after Cerberus took control of Chrysler and was not part of the automaker's future product plans prior to its split with Daimler.

While the current 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 just received an update for 2008 that includes a new version of its iconic V10 engine capable of producing 600 horsepower and a track-ready ACR model, it was only ever meant to be on the market for another two years until the fully redesigned next-gen Viper bowed. Since that's reportedly not going to happen, the Viper will reportedly be sold as is through the 2011 model year.

The Viper has never been a cheap car to build, being assembled by hand at the automaker's Connor Avenue Assembly Plant. The obvious argument for killing the halo car is that money spent on developing the next-generation Viper could go towards better interiors and more appealing designs for bread and butter models, the sales of which keep the lights on at the company's Auburn Hills, MI headquarters. The Viper, however, has always been more than just a halo car for Chrysler, it's been a symbol of what the company can do when it's firing on all cylinders. If this report is true, to see it cancelled indicates just how lean these times really are for Chrysler under its new management.

You have to understand, this is the car that made me a car guy. Back in 9th grade HS I would look at the car crazy guys and think to myself, "I like cars, but I'm not like these other guys".

THEN, Dodge showed the concept and BAM...I was officially made into a car guy. So, this is pretty sad news for me considering the Vette is going to miss it's main competitor from the US.

It's sad times at Dodge for them to kill this beast!

While I understand Chrysler's rationale for phasing the Viper out, it'll be sad to see it go. It was not only a crown jewel for the Chrysler Corporation/Group/LLC (whatever it is now)...but a crown jewel for American automobiles overall. It will be missed.

As sad as it is, it is really the responsible decision to make. That money needs to be used to make the rest of the fleet competitive.

hmm...It's too bad really. As pieced together as that car was, it was quick.

I was hoping to see a Mopar answer to the ZR-1 - apparently not.

okay, here's my take... the person who wants to kill the viper should be shot... I also think that instead of killing the venom spitter... (sweet nickname huh?) make it on a made to order basis. but as i said, he who kills the viper must be shot.

I just thought of something, Caroll Shelby helped design the Viper, maybe he should talk to Chrysler, and But the rights, and Namesake of the Viper, and Make it one of his Shelby models... Just a thought

And I think that Bob Lutz did too.

The biggest problem with the Viper is that there is no base version. You only get a hardcore V10 monster, you can't get a 'weak' 400-450 hp version to compete with the base Corvette. As a result, cost goes up and proffit comes down.
