Chevy says 8.2 0-60. Lol. Definitely a downgrade, so a test drive is definitely in order.

The problem I see if the with the Sonic being performance kind of the sub compacts is this. Why in the hell would you buy a sub compact for performance in the first place? Secondly why wouldn't you want said sub-compact to be as economical as possible? The EPA ratings aren't all that impressive so I really don't how something like the Sonic is going to stand out.

2012 GTI turbo diesel > 2012 Chevrolet Sonic.
Looks that way to me at least.

more expensive and worse fuel economy.
I'm looking at it from an economical, "save money for now" stand-point

40mpg on a turbo doesn't sound good? I do agree, I wouldn't buy a car like this because I want to be the fastest car out there. Just something that might be fun to tinker with and have some fun driving, all while saving up for a better car. Definitely don't want to drive around in a Prius. Lol. The corollas advertise 40mpg don't they? On an NA motor

If it was the base engine you didn't have to pay markup to get that would be one thing. There are alternatives out there that offer better fuel economy at a lower price. I ought to know out of all people on this site.

Name them, because I'm serious about getting an eco car. Name me a car under 20K that has better fuel economy and better performance stats.

Won't beat the Sonic but you can argue with a 42.4 MPG lifetime average in my Fiesta. I just drove hope back from Alamogordo; 468 miles not one fill up. Averaged 43.78 MPG the ride home.
