I have a question.

What happend to the 4.5 diesel v8 that gm was gonna put in the 1500s if they were concerned about meeting gas requirements this would sovle that. Ive been antcipated a 1500 diesel for awhile since i saw pics and articles in motortrend and other mags.

Supposedly it's ready to go...not sure what GM is waiting on.

GM is bringing a diesel-powered Cruze in 2013 so perhaps they're waiting until then to unleash a diesel onslaught.

I suspect the hold up is the EPA and big government regulations.
GM has to prove those with asthma won't have trouble breathing diesel emissions.
GM also has to prove the ozone layer won't open up and cause global warming.
We don't have C1500 diesels due to attorneys and lawsuits.

It got halted when they went bankrupt, duramaxforum.com was all over it until that point. If there is any current info, that's where I would look.

The biggest problem with diesel right now is that the payback period is usually too long. Diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline, and diesel engines are more expensive than their gasoline counterparts.

Diesels last longer and have a higher resale value compared to the gas engine counterparts. I hope its not the whole having to have urea?(spelling) that is holding it back. The price difference in gas really isnt that much what maybe 20 cents from premium gas rating? Well atleast around here thats how it is.

The big 3 have had many versions of small displacement diesels in the works for the past 10 years and NOTHING ever happens.

I dont know why they even bother spending tens maybe hundreds of millions developing these engines only for them to get the axe once completed. Most automakers already have small diesels in the non-US models.

Sounds awfully fishy and I wouldn't hold your breath.

Last I heard, diesels in light duty trucks may be gone in the next 5 years alltogether. Price to comply with updated emissions may run as high as $5G just for the exhaust. Add in the higher price of the engine, and the break even point may be too high. Hope I am wrong, but you can only fight city hall so far.

There are different emissions standards & fuel taxes in other markets. So while smaller diesels may not be viable in the US, they could still enjoy popularity Europe, South America, or elsewhere. One little hickup for this engine is that V8s aren't terribly popular in most other markets. It seems almost as if it were being designed specifically for half ton pickups, which are practically exclusive to North America. So without a domestic business case for it or a global business case for it ... GM kinda runs out of options on where they could sell them in enough volume to justify all the tooling needed to build them.

To me it seems a like a perfect union cause not everyone wants a HD truck to get a diesel in a truck. Shouldnt it get mid twenties on the hwy with a diesel? that will help them meet the fuel economy standards the Govt has mandated. I understand that this truck will prolly be redisigned in a few years maybe then and i can only hope or else a chevy might not be in my future.

From some information about the new Colorado:

Diesels: Two for Thailand, None for You
In addition to the numerous build combinations available, the Colorado offers two new diesel four-cylinders. Just like the truck they will power, the engines are labeled as "all-new" by GM and are a part of a new global line of diesel four-cylinders. The base is a 2.5-liter unit that makes 150 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque; the second is a 2.8-liter that makes 180 hp and a meaty 346 lb-ft of torque when bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission, 324 lb-ft when mated to a five-speed manual. If the Colorado does make it here, it likely will feature a gas-only engine lineup. Chevy recently announced that a diesel-powered Cruze is on its way here for 2013, though, so don't rule out the possibility of an oil-burning small pickup for the U.S. somewhere down the road.
"Don't rule it out" seems to be the line regarding the new Colorado's chances in the U.S. Chevrolet developed the truck for more than 60 markets spanning the globe; it's hard to believe the U.S. would be left out of that count. Depending on how you look at it, the death of the Ford Ranger is either an indication of where the small-truck market is going or an opportunity for GM to seize the segment.
