there's a long-lost thread on here somewhere, where I posted up results from running oil and filter combinations with my 94Z28. I ran IIRC 13 different oils and 7 or 8 filters in various combinations.

M1/M1,Wix,Purolator,K&N and a couple other filters (not fram however... I'll never run fram again)
RP with the same combo
Amsoil, Valvoline, Castrol, Redline, and one or two others

changed the oil at roughly 500 mile intervals (with ~10-20 track passes on each combo) and samples sent off to Blackstone Labs for analysis.

after all was said and done
Redline with a wix filter proved to be the best
Redline with a Purolator Pureone filter was second
RP with a wix filter was third
RP with a pureone filter 4th
M1/wix - 5th
M1/Pureone -6th
then amsoil, valvoline, etc following that

if Redline wasnt as pricey as it was, Id run it all the time.

now... for a completely different look at things, one of my friends here in town has a late model GTO and lives about 7 miles from our friends shop with a dyno. any and everything he has done to his car, he dynos it.

changes the air filter, dyno
changes the gear fluid, dyno
changes the clutch fluid, dyno
changes the brakes, dyno
and of course, changes the oil, dyno.

well about a year ago, he finally decided to "see what all the hype was about with synthetic oil" as he had been running regular dyno oil in his 400rwhp (stock cam) GTO since he got it.

well, he went out and changed from $2.XX dino oil to the ~$6-8 M1 and filter.

went to the dyno and lost 7hp across the board. not just peak, but an average of 7hp lost.

went back to the store and changed right back to dino oil.
