I go to the store. I buy 2 pounds of apples, 3 pounds of bananas, 6 pounds of oranges, 4 pounds of pears, 8 pounds of grapes, and 5 pounds of lemons. The price of buying one pound of everything is $3.85. Orange are seven times as expensive as apples. Two pounds of grapes and a pound of apples cost the same as a pound of lemons. A pound of pears, a pound of grapes, a pound of oranges, and a pound of apples is the same as a pound of lemons. What was the total bill?

I got a coupon.... buy one apple...... %^# the rest

my favorite was what I did in high school...... we had that question:

"Train A leaves charlotte heading east at 110mph, train B leaves Raleigh at 140mph 20 minutes later.... at what time will they pass".

My answer (I was working for the RR at the time):

Never..... there's no locomotive capable of those speeds in operation here, and the speedlimit is 15mph around the curve leaving Raleigh..... it would wreck. Also.... When you pass the scanner around the 161 milepost (same stuff you track the camaro's with)..... it records your speed, do 140mph in a 49mph zone..... it will immediately contact the "higher ups".......

and the teacher had the nerve to say I was wrong???

Are you saying that what I learned in school is useless? Plus, I thought there were no wrong answers in school anymore. I can't be wrong about that, because if I learned anything in school, it's that is impossible.

This POP quize will be worth 90% of you grade good luck.
Call me challenged, if you must, but I'm lost on this

Why...wouldn't it be a dime? I see a .05 in here, but if the bat is $1.00 more, wouldn't that equal $1.05?

Sad I know, but math hurts me.

Both. I did the algebra by hand. I don't bother doing the multiplication and division by hand anymore though, that's what calculators are for.

Been watching Die Hard movies, have we?

Together the two items cost $1.10

One item costs $1.00 more than the other. Make the baseball x and the bat y.

x + y = 1.1 This is the equation for the first statement
y = x + 1 This is the equation for the second statement

Now, take the second equation and substitute it into the first:

x + (x + 1) = 1.1
2x + 1 = 1.1
2x = 0.1
x = .05 So, the baseball costs 5 cents. Now, plug that into either of the original equations

0.05 + y = 1.1
or
y = 0.5 + 1

Both tell you that y = 1.05

Now I feel..... tired, lol I see the math now and had to do it on paper substituting "X" with ball and "Y" with bat.

This is why I just stare at my son when he brings pre-cal questions to me!

I was wrapped up in the ball had to be a dime.
