Why is "not legal for street use" not enough?

Because the government wants to control what we do. Our government (Ca in particular) is attempting to convince us hybrid and Green friendly alternative energy is the future. The Boss 302 represents the antithesis of what government wants us to own and drive. So the government makes ownership of the Boss inconvenient with a blatant reminder you didn't buy a car "we approve of" by withholding the track key.

I wonder what emissions settings Ford uses this "feature" to modify?....

Either way...chalk this up to another reason why CA should be ejected from the union...

That's gotta be unconstitutional, I'd be suing the state for infringing on my rights if I lived there. Frikkin California.... I suppose if someone REALLY wanted to get around that they could take delivery of the car out of state maybe?

Wish we could.... my answer would delve a little too far into the 'no politics' zone though so I'll just say it's not as easy as it should be.

No. There are 2 separate keys for the Boss 302....a black key and red key. The black key represents the "normal" mode and the red key is the "track key". You insert either key into the steering column like any other car. When the track key is inserted, it changes the parameters in the engine tuning for better performance and I believe it also opens exhaust cutouts to bypass the mufflers.

Well I think it is a lot of BS that you would need to buy a different key for more performance from the dealer anyway. Serves Ford right for doing it in the first place. Go buy a Camaro instead and you won't have any problems.
