I think Berean is on to something here. The clue about vocabulary may hook into the "ped" for child and/learning.

Does it mean learning something half-assed? A new word, perhaps?

It was used to describe me at about the age of 12, when I thought I knew everything.... y'all are close! How long until I can give the definition if no one comes up with it?

How about being gracious to those who put in such herculean efforts. Sometimes you gotta' settle for the friendly road. That's what I do when the participant has got the idea pretty much.
