By the way when I said vitriol I was using it in the sense of vitriolic, or full of spite, bitter, hateful. Acidic

I love portmanteau, one of my favorite words and I NEVER get to use it! A large suitcase.

The term "portmanteau" originates from the French words 'Porter' -- to carry, and "manteau" --coat or overcoat. Yes, it is a suitcase of sorts.

I believe it means a mark of some sort against which other things are measured. It serves as a warning indicating when one is on track. Am I right?
