This is not a small mistake. You can't put all your eggs in one basket and then complain when it turns out you picked the wrong basket. GM made a HUGE mistake in that regard and has continually made big mistakes.

Rick Wagoner had EIGHT years to turn the company around and the company is still not doing well (the recession is obviously not helping, but lets be honest the recession only accelerated their problems). Any other CEO would have been ousted A LONG time ago.

I'm not saying Rick Wagoner is a horrible person or horrible businessman, but he's just not the guy GM needs to save the company at the moment.

EDIT: Also, to be clear all of the bailed out banks either have a new CEO or are bankrupt.
Why do you think that most of the Japanese makers started building larger SUVs and trucks? they saw hugh profits being made by GM and Ford with them, and they wanted a piece of the pie.
If you look at the trend the way the Japanese makers gained more market share was they started building larger trucks and SUV's (sequoia, tundra, titan, armada), and kept their smaller cars too. then when the oil thng started people turned to them with the false sense that only the Japaneese made small fuel effecient cars when GM made many also... It was the public perception that did GM in, not their managment...Even after the oil problems of last year people were unaware of the gas mileage GM's Cars and trucks got... so they didn't have a 45MPG Car, but they made many models that got close to or over 30MPG... My wife had a 2007 Cobalt that would get 38 MPG on the highway easily... and 28-30 around town. I had a 2007 Saturn Aura that got 32-33 on the highway and averaged 24 around town.
You can't say GM had all their eggs in one basket, it's just people didn't look in all of GM's baskets to see the other eggs...

In lockstep with B.O., Canadian and Ontario gov'ts agree that GM and Chrysler's plans are not realistic.

Have you not seen all the commercials for the last several years trying to change that perception? NOBODY IS LISTENING. evidently you haven't either if you haven't noticed..... People have been so brainwashed into believeing only the Japanese build cars that get good mileage they don't even listen any more...

It's still management's job...if the public isn't listening, then your marketing model is a failure and you need to re-visit your marketing plan.

True and that's why you need good people in marketing positions who can cut through all of that. It seems mediocrity in business is either acceptable or rewarded these days.

They have several times, If a GM ad comes on, people just turn a deaf ear to it and not listen......you can't force them to listen...

Are you in marketing? maybe you have a marketing scheme that will work.. so tell us how you will get people are going to listen to GM's ads?
